I don't wear shoes in the house -or at all if I can help it but just....ick...now I, not one of those antibacterial everything proponents but I think it shows that we don't always know where nasties might hide. (Hey I still believe in the five second rule - I don't care what they say)

I saw this earlier this morning.

Ya know what gets me? Until 'someone' starting telling 'us' what was going on in the things we eat, breathe, use, etc., we did OK as a whole. Now, everyone is so, "Eww, I can't eat/breathe/use/etc. that! It could do heaven only knows what to me."

I look at it this way. I've lived this long without knowing about some things.
I bet I can live another 40-50 years being just as "ignorant".

Just my $.02

You and me both! IN fact I think more kids need to go outside with no shoes on, be handed a peanut butter sandwich by their moms regardless of what they've been doing, drop it in the dirt, pick it up and eat it!!!!

We NEED some germs and minor little sickies to keep us healthy overall...we overtreat and over clean in some cases (I know of someone who killed her septic system by using too much "antibacterial" stuff).

And people wonder why more and more kids have asthma and we have MRSA.

Get dirty people!! Let the dog lick your ice cream!

Sure thing - my ferret and I used to eat ice cream and cereal together! One less bowl to clean!

To an extent, yeah. I agree. S'why I was happy when the doctor said last week she doesn't like prescribing antibiotics right off the cuff.

But at the same time? We don't die from little cuts going septic any more. A little dirt, some germs-- that's fine. But I wanna have the big guns to back me up if I need 'em!

See, and I find that disgusting for a different reason... ::tinfoil:

I have no problem letting the dog lick my plate once I'm done, tho, provided I wasn't eating anything chocolate!

And the big guns will work so much better if they aren't prescribed for every little thing...

As a mom to be, these things are stuff I am fairly interested in. I am actually of the mind that there is too much "antibacterial" stuff out there. If we don't build up the antibodies to some of these things, we won't be able to fight it. Which was confirmed by a doctor (who is also a mom of a wonderfully beautiful and healthy little girl), that we need to build up these antibodies. She went as far as not bathing her baby every day so her little body would have a chance to build up natural defenses. I know I get nervous every once in a while afraid that I ate the wrong thing or may be not eating enough fish, etc. Then I remind myself that there are women addicted to crack out there destroying their bodies having healthy babies. So I do the best I can. Most of us were brought up before the creation of all this antibacterial soaps and cleaners and we seem to be doing just fine. Saying all that, I now need to go wash my hands because I feel all skeezy reading about ickiness!

Yeah it does ick a lot of people out - of course I had to be careful because ferrets can get the same colds we get so I didn't want to pass anything off to him.

(Yso- I agree - the big guns are good WHEN YOU NEED THEM but too many people just ask and receive these days to kind of pacify them. A cold is a vrius - antibiotics don't help!)

One night after getting home from doing something, cant' remember what, I was wearing a pair of rubber flip flops, and it was pouring in Manhattan. They get wet, my feeties slide right off and I twist something. So I took them off and walked 2 blocks barefoot on the upper east side. Bob swore I was gonna get Cholera. lol

But seriously, there's way too much antibacterial stuff. We NEED antibodies, and being exposed to some bacteria is the ONLY way we get the much needed antibodies.

And yea, I let Kermit eat pretty much anything he wants out of my hands, my plate and sometimes my mouth, but he only does that with hot dog. lol

I don't antibacterial-within-an-inch-of-their-lives my kids. It doesn't make sense to me. The example I gave my kiddos when younger was this:

Say you NEED to run fast, to get away from danger. Now, if you've been playing outside every day... when you need it, your body will be able to pump the energy out.

BUT... what if you've been sitting on your tushie, watching videos and playing games all day? Your body is gonna poop out on ya.

Want to stay healthy? Train and practice with small germies, so your body is ready when the biggies come after ya.

(Hey, it was something they could understand when they were, like, 4 or so. ) ;-)

Dave's not allowed to wear his work shoes inside, but where he works can be downright nasty - and I don't want the new carpets stained with oils and grease.

People get skeeved all the time when I don't freak when Gwydion picks something up off the floor to eat. Or drops his binky and pops it back into his mouth. I keep telling them that he needs some good germs to build up his immunities. And at his age dirt is a food group. I've gotta be doing something right - other than that one bad stomach bug last summer, he hasn't been sick with anything worse than a mild cold. ;-)

Hun...I know people "our" age who wouldn't understand it unless you explain it like that....or as my mentor likes to point out - what's the first thing everyone always says when someone dies suddenly at a young age.....

"Gee he was never sick a day in his life!!"

See, this article wouldn't help me much, cause I prefer to walk outdoors barefoot as much as possible, and I can't kick my feet off at the door. My students laugh at me cause I'll come to school wearing heels and kick them off in the middle of teaching. I forget I have them off and walk around campus that way too. (Mostly outdoor campus.) I hate how protective we've become with our children about silly things. Tag and playground isn't going to kill most children with proper supervision. We don't need to sterilize within an inch of our lives. No wonder our bacteria and viruses are becoming "super;" we use the drugs so often for little things that they get used to it!

I have a bottle of antibacterial stuff in my classroom only because it helps keep us from passing the same cold around over and over again. But it's been empty for about a month, and I still haven't bothered to go buy a new one. It just isn't a big deal to me that much. If they wash their hands once in a while during the day, life will go on.

I take my shoes off at the door, but only because it means I have to vacuum less xP

Follow basic food safety with hand washing around raw meats or blood, when you're done in the 'loo, and before you eat. There's no need to have anti-bac stuff slathered everywhere all the time.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think a National Geographic article on allergies a few years ago threw in the interesting fact that kids raised on farms had fewer allergies than city-raised younglings. And yes, it was because they lived around more dirt.

So did I!!! *joins in*::runfore:

I love going barefoot, inside and out. I would much rather not wear shoes for some reason. I went barefoot through Windsor, Ontario for like a mile once because my shoes were killing my feet. :P

And I totally agree - we've become WAY too antibacterial crazy.

I work at a summer camp now and I'm only 7-8 years older than my campers (8th-9th grade)...most of them are allergic to something that I never thought a lot of people were allergic to. Like peanuts. When I went to camp I think only 2 people in the entire camp were allergic to peanuts. At the camp I'm working at, there are so many that we've made the campus a peanut-free zone.

Why people feel the need to sanatize things to death is beyond me. Kids are gonna get sick and there is nothing that you can do to stop it. I have been lucky so far with Little Bit he has only had one very mild ear infection. I let him play on the floor and well he eats dirt!
I was taught from a very young age to take my shoes off at the door, its respectful. Also my granma is a clean freak and I would have been in deep poo if I did not take off my shoes!

*snicker* One of my friends used to say: "God made dirt so dirt don't hurt"

The only thing I am militant about is raw chicken ooze. *blech*

Otherwise Shorty has gotten dirty, gotten sunburned, drank from the hose, doesn't wear a helmet or pads when she's on her scooter, played with worms and has not been taken to the doctor for every cold (honey, whiskey and lemon juice work just fine, thanks). Sure she's gotten a cold, but otherwise she's only been to the doctors for physicals and needed updates.

Even if you look at a super clean house or area, you will still find some germs and bacteria. I figure you can't kill them all, so may as well live with them.

You too? I figure it's been baking in the sun long enough any critters have been cooked - not that I really care anyway. Besides I have the bestest well water.....

of course I wander through my yard picking sorrel (one of my favorites!) and chickweed and violets and just eating them as I go...or picking fruit off the mulberry tree and eating it....nomina nomina (and I started 17 quarts of mulberry wine!)

There was a show on the Discovery Channel for a while (British show) called Dr. Know.....he tested the five second rule using cantalope, jelly beans and a shrimp (I think). Your kitchen floor is actually dirtier than the average side walk. Because the sun bleaches out the sidewalk! And of course the cantalope which is juicy picked up more stuff....

I've lost count of the biopsies, and he'll be on red alert for melanoma the rest of his life.

I'm afraid that's yours and mine and most men of their generation and probably most of ours cause they went without their shirts all of the time. We can at least be out in it but not get baked by it!!! I'm sure I have some damage myself - I was the little Coppertone girl as a child. I know I have melasma but fortunately that doesn't have any evidence of being a precursor or indicator to anything....

Ironically, a guy I work with just had yet another melanoma removed - and HIS are not from the sun - they are from the steroids used to treat his Lupus since he was about 12. Especially since he went out so little because he was sick....
