I just received this email from my local renfaire. For those who don't know, we're moving to a wonderful new site this year...if the local commissioners will allow us the permits. The land has already been purchased, and most of the work has been done to open the first weekend of August, but now the commissioners are dragging their feet. Please read the letter below, and then email the heck out of those idiots...in a nice way, of course, do they will realize they really do want us invading their county every August! Thanks!

Dearest Friends,

As everyone knows by now we are moving the Washington Renaissance Faire to a new site in Belfair, Washington. For the last six months we have been diligently working to prepare the site for the Faire to open in August.

Although we have many supporters in the Mason County community we have come across some challenges in the permitting process to get the Castle Gate open in August. There have been many rumors and numerous news articles that have partially described some of these challenges.

Many of our friends and supporters have asked the Question, "Will Faire happen this year?" We offer a resounding and resolved "Yes" to that question. However, there is a meeting of the County Commisioners planned for July 15, 2008 in which the Mason County Commisioners will vote as to whether we should be allowed to get the permits we need for the Faire to open in August.

We ask now for your support and your voice!

Sincerely,
The Washington Renaissance Faire

There's an anti-faire petition circulating as well, link is in the first comment at the bottom of the page.

It is frustrating. We have been looking forward to the new site all year and now are not sure if we will even be able to have faire now. I am hopeful that we will be able to.

It's official. We will not be having a ren faire here in WA this year. I just got this im my email.

Dearest Friends, Family and Supporters,

It is with our deepest regret that we must announce that the
Washington Renaissance Fantasy Faire, planned to be held August 2, 3, 9,
10, 16, 17, 2008, in Belfair Washington has been canceled.

Due to challenges with the permitting process and after a meeting
with the Department of Natural Resources yesterday and a meeting this
morning with the Mason County Commissioners, we have not and will not be
granted our permits to run the Faire this season. We have done
everything that we could have done and have exhausted all avenues to
make this event happen on the new site this year.

We offer our deepest and sincerest apologies to all that this
cancellation will affect. We understand that plans have been made,
tickets have been bought and travel plans have been arranged in order to
attend the Washington Renaissance Faire.

It is our sincerest hope to work with the Mason County
Commissioners, the Department of Natural Resources and the Planning
Commission for Mason County to resolve these challenges satisfactorily
in order to re-open the Washington Renaissance Faire in August of 2009
on our new site in Belfair, Washington.

Thank you all for the support and love that you have offered us over
the past 11 years and know that you have our deepest gratitude for your
support both now through these trying times and in the future as we grow
and prosper.

Sincerely,
Ron and Teresa Cleveland and all the
Washington Renaissance Faire Staff

While it is too bad that the faire has to be called off this year, I can understand the town being upset if the owner didn't follow proceedure to secure his permits. You can't just waltz into a location and assume everything will work out. It takes due dilligence to get all your legal ducks in a row and it sounds like this owner just assumed everyone would roll over.

He now has over 12 months to work on next year. Let's hope that he works the system in the correct manner.

I'm really, really sorry that happened. I know I would be devestated if we had to cancel one of our seasons. I wish you all the best.
