Does anyone have any good pattern suggestions for a monk's robe? My brother has decided he wants one and ask me to make him one. I know he likes this (http://www.museumreplicas.com/museumreplicas/detail.aspx?ID=82) look. So any suggestions? It can either be a store bought pattern or one I do myself, but I am not good at designing my own patterns.

How about the second view only close up the front?

I made the monk's outfit my friend Friar Seamus is wearing in this gallery:

You'll have to scroll through, but there are a couple of shots of Seamus in there somewhere. The monk's outfit I built for him consists of a heavy brown cotton duck robe with sleeves, a natural linen tabard, and a lined hooded cowl.

I don't have a pattern as such, since I drafted this garb myself, but it might give you some ideas for making your own.

For the robe itself you can use any long robe/tunic pattern. I would look for patterns that are tapered from shoulder to hemline, to avoid bulk on top while providing ample room for walking.

http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M5683.htm??tab=costumes&page=1 this one looks good, but I haven't actually seen it yet, so I can't promise it will be good. I usually pull out the instruction sheets and see how the pattern pieces are shaped.

For the hood, I would suggest this:

I would use view d-e and cut off the back point at the first seam and either leave off or fill in the bottom so it is a circle instead of being fancy.

I used this currently OUT OF PRINT McCalls pattern to make monks garb for a friend. If you can find it, watch the shoulder and arm measurements - you need to increase the measurements there to get the width you need.

Also, the hood on this pattern is just a simple hood - not one with a long 'tail' on it like the example you showed Amalthea. However, if you can find this pattern, it should be an easy tweek.

Thanks for all the suggestions, My brother is a big guy so I will probably have to modify any pattern I can find.

I so know the answer to this one. I found it on sewingpatterns.com (no I don't own stock in it, wish I did then I'd get some money back). I did the download version. You can print the pattern as many times as you want. Sorry didn't take a picture of the finished robe. It was for a guy about 5'8" and shall we say 'very healthy' around the middle and arms. It turned out great. He was in love with it and now he's going to work on my website. Tee Hee
