Not as it was used in this context.

When the *Christians* were being persecuted by the Romans, they needed a symbol to secretly identify themselves to each other.

The fish came about from the Greek word for 'fish' (which I'm blanking on at the moment)...each letter in the word stood for a phrase (which I'm also blanking on at the moment, something like 'In the body and blood of Christ').

So, they'd draw a fish with the Greek word for 'fish' within it to identify meeting places and to make themselves known to other early Christians.

I do like the 'Gefilte' one, too. Oy. :)
