Palin To Drop Puck At Flyers Home Opener
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― Alaska Governor and Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin, the nation's most popular hockey mom, will take center ice opening night as the Flyers host the New York Rangers to kick off their 2008/2009 season.

On Saturday, October 11, Palin will drop the puck along with the winner of the Philadelphia Flyers regional search for the "Ultimate Hockey Mom" yet to be announced.

"Because of the tremendous amount of publicity she has brought to our sport, we invited the most popular hockey mom in North America to our home opener to help us get our season started," said Comcast-Spectacor Chairman Ed Snider who founded the Flyers in 1967. "We are very excited she has accepted our offer and we are very proud of the publicity she is generating for hockey moms and the sport of hockey."

The Philadelphia Flyers organization has been searching for the "Ultimate Hockey Mom" in an online contest which asked hockey players and hockey moms to enter the contest by submitting a "hockey mom poster."

The winner of the contest will join the Alaska Governor at center ice to drop the ceremonial puck and will also receive $500 gift certificates to David J. Witchell Salon and Spa and to the Wachovia Center's Fan Gear store.

Sarah Palin has been in the political battleground keystone state campaigning with Senator John McCain.

On Wednesday, the McCain campaign held a major rally at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.

Yeah, cos it's not like we're not one of the most solidly Democrat cities in the country. Oh, no.

Not to mention Flyers fans-- Philly sports fans in general-- are notorious for their...er...unique brand of hospitality. This has all the earmarks of Spectacular Train Wreck. Bring popcorn.

This is going to be even more orgasmatastic than the reception Bush got when he threw out the first pitch at the National's home opener this year.

Damn....!!! I was sooooo hoping that the Philly player would take a Hail Mary swing at the puck and side line Palin in the puss.

Sigh.... I guess I will just have to rely on my imagination.

So how does this sentiment differ from the objections to the shouts of violence aimed at Senator Obama?

Hoping a woman takes a hockey stick to the face weilded by a professional player is disturbing.

while i don't wish her any harm, it would have been funny if she had slipped on the ice and fallen on her bottom.

boo-ing is rude, but it is not the same as yelling "kill him" and "he's a terrorist" (which to some people means the same thing)

No one threatened her, no one was violent to her. They put her in front of a rowdy crowd who was guaranteed to be, well, rowdy and probably unfriendly towards her, and that crowd booed her a solid two minutes. This is the city that threw batteries at Santa Claus. I'd say this was a fairly tame-- if completely predictable-- response.

And yeah-- booing at a hockey game from people who don't like you is one thing. Shouts of "Kill him!" from people at your own rally whom you've riled up against your enemy is entirely another.

This is what I was replying to:

"sooooo hoping that the Philly player would take a Hail Mary swing at the puck and side line Palin in the puss"

I expected her to get booed.

It's always been that way though :) We boo our own sports teams, our mayor, everyone. It's a "tough love" kind of town.

My only thing is - why couldn't she come out on the ice on skates? Why make them roll out that mat which is a pain to bring in and out.

Not knowing what the YouTube link was going to show. I was expecting some sort of Slap Stick humor as opposed to just listening to the woman getting booed non-stop for 2 minutes. I was expecting a "shopped" over video as has been frequesntly posted on YouTube multiple times and other websites.
I am not personally wishing that she would get smacked in the face with a hockey stick, nor would I wish that anyone else get smacked in the face with a hockey stick. However, going back to what I was expecting & not knowing what the link would show. I was aware that it was a Hockey event (AKA a Fight on Ice) and not knowing who or what Yso was linking to. There have been many jokes made towards both canidates some just as callow as the one as I made and yet I thought it was taken as how was intended: A JOKE. My apologies. I'll save my jokes for the Fluffly & the Funny Forum.

I guess she's a Rangers fan because she kissed the Ranger, but didn't kiss the Flyers player. Snubbed the home-town player right in his own rink. Oh the scandal!!

Considering that the woman in question is largely responsible for stoking the fires that certainly increased the amount of violent thoughts being directed towards Obama, I guess that this sentiment differs in that it is largely driven by karma.

Also, there's a significant difference in that Sarah Palin is a third-rate beauty queen wanna-be and a political cunning stunt of the lowest and most cynical order, while Barack Obama is the next President of the United States.

Oh, and I like how she brought her daughters out as Human Shields, thinking that would keep people from booing her.

Yeah. She actually said somewhere she was using her seven year old as a shield, but I can't find where. No one knew who that kid was, and more importantly, no one at that game would care.

I don't think I could physically bring myself to boo anyone outside of a joust or a reading of the Megillah, but I do take a certain karmic joy in the story.

I would have loved to see that at the Garden!
