Okay Ladies, the results of the voting are as follows. remember to send me your #1 choice by 02/14/04.
1. Thad Eure Walk for Hope which is the ONLY charitable fundraiser in the nation (held here in Raleigh ;-)) that raises money for promoting awareness & research support for mental illness. Of course, like breast cancer, this
is a non-discriminating disease that effects MILLIONS
of people every single day and if left untreated, can
have heavy, permanent effects on those that struggle,
those who love the ill and sometimes society at large.
Unlike breast cancer, however, there is a great deal
of bias, stigma & discrimination both socially &
policially against mental illness and there may be
those who are uncomfortable with the issue or taking a
stand.
2. American Diabtetes Association
3. The Leukemia-Lymphoma Society, about how much good the Society has done, with its connections to the National Bone Marrow Donor program, and how my best friend Jan's life was literally saved by a bone marrow transplant, which would not have been possible without the help of the Registry (care of the Society).
4. The Laurie Springer Foundation, Awards grants for research on and assists families living with ovarian cancer. This one hits near and dear to many of us (even if you don't know it) our current Madame was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in March of 2003, had surgery and was at Faire a week later. Talk about dedicated. Laurie Springer worked at the UNC-CH Hospital for a period of time, so we have a local connection. ;)
5. NC Zoo
6. American Cancer Society
7. Gilda's Clubs, this foundation was set up by Gilda Radner after her diagnosis with cancer as a place for anybody (men, women or children) with cancer could go for support and laughter. Gene Wilder supports these clubs with both grants and administrative help. There are Gilda's clubs nation wide.
8. March of Dimes
9. Alzheimers Foundation
10. MS Society
Let me know Ladies :)
