They had a thing on our news, saying there is no medical proof that the body needs 8 glasses of water a day, and in fact if you push yourself to drink that much and you are not used to it, you can cause more harm than good....
just when you think you get it right, they change the rules

64 oz and counting (pulling off shoes and socks). When I say I drink like a fish, I'm not joking! At festival, that tankard that seems glued to my hand isn't a prop.

I'm with you, I go through phases where I get thirsty but not a lot. I can drink a lot more water if I put fresh lemon juice in it though...

The main reason for drinking so much water is that it keeps the bodty flushed as well as hydreated.
I haven't heard about it doing more harm then good though.. What is with that??
Also Add a little Crystal Light.. No calories!

Water poisoning is possible and does happen. It happens if one is losing a lot of water to perspiration and is replacing only water and not electrolytes.
The amount of water one actually needs depends on body size, body to fat ratio, activity level, temperature, individual metabolism, health conditions, alcohol consumption, medications, etc. The easest way to determine if one is sufficiently hydrated is the color of you urine. If it's clear (ideal) or barely yellow as it comes out, you are probably alright. Frequency can be another factor. If you go all day with only one or two trips to the privy, you are probably dehydrated. On the flip side, if water seems to bypass the kidneys and go straight to the bladder, you probably need electrolytes. Pickles or pickle juice is a fair (pun not intended) source for electrolytes. If anything salty, like pickles, tastes sweet, you probably were in need of electrolytes.
Btw, if you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated.
Interesting note: I have to avoid potassium because of medication I'm on which leaves out sports drinks except for once in a blue moon.

I never really drank that much water but I plan to this week due to a dare from a friend. She claimed that I couldn't have a bottle of water a day ( especially during class) while everyone else in the class could. Well considering that much of my classes are filled with 18-20somethings I had to prove her wrong!
I am actually find it hard on the first day. I'm so used to grabbing coffee for my energy boost.

I actually bought a jug which holds 2.2L of water. Which (as it says on the side of the bottle) is the correct recomended amount of water per day. So I go through one of those a day and I'm set. It takes me all day to drink it though which is good.

about the water poisoning thing...
I do know that as a swim instructor... i have to take serious precautions with very young children b/c they often drink much of the water during lessons. There is a serious danger to getting children sick, not from the chemicals, but from the sheer volume of water they consum. It does mess up your electrolytes.
i think that we all need to drink more but as with anyhing but love... moderation please!!

There was a recent hazing incident at SMU. Instead of Alcohool they were using water. They thought they wouldn't get in trouble. A pledge ended up in a coma. They thought wrong.
You can over drink on the water. It is correct that several factors need to be looked at. Your Doctor should be able to help you determine how much you need.
Really keep an eye on anyone who you might think has an eating disability. They are actually at a higher risk for water poisioning.

I can't have soda... I can't have coffee... I can't have tea (except herbal)...
I can have juice, milk, soy milk (joy) and water... heh... and in restarants I order "water with lemon"
I consume between 7 and 9 8oz servings of water a day... but I did build up to that...
