View Full Version : Starting Atkins - Doctor Prescribed
Psyche

Midnight May 1st (ok, 11:59 pm) I am starting a doctor prescribed Atkins DIEt. The doctor fully believes carbs are a drug for me and that likely I am allergic to at least wheat if not sugar as well. I can't get an appointment for the allergy clinic until October so she decided I was not going to wait to test this theory.
Don't worry... I will be eating healthily.
I am going to take before pictures and measurements and hide them so I don't make myself cry. I will post whatever progress I am lucky enough to have.
I think I am ready. Well, almost. I have to have a sinful lunch at the Tea Room at GARF and yummy Mexican at Laffies Saturday night. And much cider and mead. And cinnamon almonds. Then I will be ready.
Oh, and sushi. Must have sushi.

That is probably the nicest and most well phrased and supportive Atkins remark I have ever read.
This simply will not be tolerated here. Please get with the program.

YEA GIRL!!
I've been on it for over a year...... NEVER felt better and never been more proud of anything..except of course THE most beautiful children on earth!...... The first few days are really tough for hardened carb addicts {like me!}..... but once you get that monkey off your back it's not so bad!! It a big life change, but if you look at it like that it helps. I believe the most important thing is supportive and understanding friends and I want you to know you have one right here! Anytime you wanna talk just give me a buzz..... i believe the reason Chris and I were so successful was because we had each other to talk to constantly about it.
Good Luck Sweety!!!

I lost another 4.8 pounds this week, bringing it to a grand total of 14.2 pounds lost forever.
*happy dance*
I am feeling really good. Last weekend at GARF I was able to walk a lot further than I had been able to before. My blood sugar has stabilized, and my headaches and migraines are gone. My pain levels are less than they were a week ago. Even my PCOS symptoms have lessened to the point of being very tolerable.
I never want to forget how crappy I felt before I started this way of eating... as that will help motivate me not to fall off the wagon. I feel free...

Carbs are not the enemy!!!
To those who do the propper Atkins or any life change I wish them Luck.
Me I was well over 200lbs in January and at 5'7" short it wasn't a pretty site to behold least of all to me 8) Atkins wasn't the best way for me to go do to having low blood sugar So I did the Body for life plan and lost over 30lbs sice Jan down to 8 -10% body fat from about 25% and the muscle gain has been great. (I did it in less than 12 weeks)
My words to you all out there is Diet isn't enough. a good workout program is needed. The other major factor is Water and rest, careful with Diet sodas and the like cause you can poison your system with Aspartame. Set golas both long and short term so you can work towards something.
Me, Starting monday I have a new short term goal. In 8 weeks I plan on getting my body fat down to 4 -6% and maintain a weight of 175 -180lbs. then I'll work on maintaining it.
Inspire yourself and inspire others
Good luck to you and if you need support we are here for you

Ah yes... Aspartame. I avoid it like the plague. *shudders* Pure poison for me. Many think it may be one of the things that triggers Fibromyalgia, which I have. I know on the rare occasions when I would have it, I would have really bad Fibro Flare-ups for days after. It will also send me into an instant migraine. It's on my official allergy list. :D
I wish I could do Body for Life. We tried it last year, and when I fractured my hip, it was a sign. Currently I am allowed no exercise by the doctors other than normal walking from one place to another. Actually they want me in a wheelchair but I am too stubborn. After my next appointment with and orthopedist, I may be allowed to start Pilates. Basically, I am looking at a hip replacement this year, unless a miracle happens with my hip. And I have to drop at least 60 pounds before they will do it, which with exercise cut out, means through diet alone. Bleck.
The doctor actually has it on my chart that I am allergic to higher glycemic carbs. I am already hypoglycemic, but add glucose, and I start testing like a diabetic. Eliminate the carbs and my blood sugar levels stay level. For the most part many of my physical symptoms have vanished on this way of eating. *happy dance*
Allergies... I could be literally allergic to carbs. When I was still in the Navy and admitted to the hospital for 11 months they did allergy tests and I was popping up allergic to everything (though this was likely reactions to other things as I have multiple cemical sensitivities). Stands to reason since my mother is highly allergic to gluten, soy, corn, rice, almost all grains, sugar beets, and the list goes on. I pretty much only eat organic anything now. We plan to do allergy tests later this year once my system had detoxed to see what my allergies really are. All I know is I felt like crap eating the carbs.
Oh my I rambled... I am not awake... nap time again.
Thank you so much for the support. It is so greatly appreciated!

I started Atkins myself, cause my DR liked it better than South Beach. Monday was my first day so I will try to see what I get next week.

I've been dying to know: what, exactly, is the difference between the two?

The SB vs. Atkins allows more in the way of good carbs into the diet that and that alone is the big difference. its all pretyt much the diabetic diet on meal approachment

A friend of mine who is diabetic says as long as you still eat some carbs, and go through ALL 4 steps of atkins you should be ok.

"Carbs suck" was obviously a joke but for some people they are indeed the enemy. Hyperinsulinemia has a myriad of deliterious effects on many people. Dr. Atkins never said dont eat carbs he said control your carb intake and get most of your carbs from vegatables. In addition he is adamant about excercise as anyone who has read is book could certainly tell you. For my 2 pence of advice I say If you choose to follow a low carb plan for weight loss or weight control, do not try to wing it on your own, because you will fail, wether it be South Beach or Atkins...read the book! In the case of Atkins It has been shown that reading the book is the number one predictor of success.

I lost another 4.0 pounds this week, bringing it to a grand total of 18.2 pounds gone forever.
I am starting to see a difference. This past weekend I wore the bodice I wore to opening weekend of GARF (April 18-19), and it had to be tightened by 3 inches and I could still breathe. I couldn't breathe opening weekend.
Yesterday was hard, as it was Kevin's birthday. I baked him his favorite cake and mint chocolate brownies. I am really proud of myself though. I didn't lick my fingers (or the beaters) nor did I eat a crumb. This is a major first for me!
And the best thing... I am less angst filled. I am happier. I am not feeling as depressed about my life (and myself) as I was. I have control again!

Huzzah!!!! Keep up (down) the good work. It's especially tough when you are cooking treats for someone special and don't get to partake. My solution is bitty bites. But abstaining is even better. :singdanc:

I accidentally figured out it was aspartame that was giving me serious bilateral migraines. Had gone to the Dr. checked for sinus probs, stress, even had CT Scan all normal. I ran out of Equal one weekend and didn't bother to get more and realized for the first time in months I dind't have a migraine! I use Splenda now :) Haven't heard anything bad about that, so far :|
Good luck on the diet, sometimes I wish I could try Atkins just to see what all the "fuss" is about but it doesn't work with vegans :sigh:

HUZZAH :cheer: way to go Psyche!!!!
It's a very hard habit/addiction to break, many carbs are just not meant to be consumed in the quantities that folks in general do now. I have had a terrible time with my eating habits since I had surgery in March. Monday of this week, I felt just horrible. I was tired, headache, joints aching.....etc, etc. Tuesday, I started back on a very low carb intake. Only carbs are salad/veggies. Already I can feel a difference in my hands and knees....the headache will take a little longer, withdrawals, ya know
I am going to be relying on the great posts to remind me how much better it is...and like it has been said before, it's better with someone than alone.
Now, two suggestions for the sweet tooths: Russell Stover has a line of candy out that is really very good. However, it is sweetened with maltitol. While I have not read/heard anything terribly negative about it, consume carefully. It can have adverse affects on some people (i.e. laxative, allergies)
Number 2: If you are a strict vegetarian/vegan, don't read  You know those little cinnamon/sugar twisty things you can get at Taco Bell??? I had a friend tell me how to make a low-carb version of them. (sorry if this has been posted before, I haven't seen it as of yet)
If you can stomach the thought of eating pork rinds....
ingredients:
pork rinds
cinnamon
Splenda
directions:
mix Splenda and cinnamon to taste in a ziplock bag (I used about 1/4 c. Splenda and 1-2 T cinnamon)
either spray the rinds with vegetable spray, water or dip them quickly in butter
put the rinds in the bag and shake it up
put in a 350 oven until they are browned and crispy.
If anyone tries it, let me know what you think.
