Woot! I can sew!

I'm so excited about this, that I just had to share....
I've been spending way to much money on garb lately. So I was thinking that if I buy a sewing machine and learn(or recall lessons from home ec. and mom) to sew, I can make some of what I want, cheaper.
I'd also been reading the forums here and on some costume groups that I belong to and taking advise on sewing machines, good fabric buys, ect...
Anyways, today I bought a kenmore from sears and finished my first project!!!! Go me! :D
I started small and made a velvet drawstring bag with fringy hanging from the bottom edge. It's so cute and I can't believe I did it without any major temper tantrums!
Maybe I'm a little silly, but I feel dang proud of myself tonite!

No, I don't have a picture yet...my mom has a digi camera, but she is on vacation this week...so when she gets back. And yes, it was quite a rush...I keep looking at it, there on the table, and feeling giddy! My honey already put in a request for a more manly version 8)

Heh. MY first was a pair of bloomers, which turned out backwards and upside down. No other way to explain it, but they were quite a sight. Then I made a chemise, only I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong with the sleeves til I realized I'd made only right sleeves like THREE times. Finally figured out that I'd laid the fabric out wrong. :augh:

BTW, I can now make chemises, and read patterns a thousand times better than I could six months ago, so don't let it get you down when your first big mistake comes along.

Congratulations and welcome to the insanity that is sewing garb!

Word of warning: it becomes an addiction. Oh, sure, you start out small. Maybe make an underskirt for yourself, since it won't really show and the crooked seams won't matter. Then you make an overskirt, because, well, with all that fabric crooked seams STILL won't matter. Then you find some really cool spider lace fabric and decide to make a chemise because everyone says chemises are easy as pie... :augh:

Then you find yourself on a Sunday afternoon, wandering around the house looking for something anything garb related you can sew. Take apart a perfectly good favor sash to add a hidden pocket to it, add new trim, purple bells and suddenly you realize. . .

I was wondering which kenmore you purchased. My 21 year old kenmore has finally bit the dust. I was looking for a machine this weekend. I feel alittle over whelmed. I loved my old one. I don't want the most expensive. I do want a machine that is going to hold up if I do some heavy sewing. Kenmore did work very well for me all those past years so, I thought I'd go for the same brand or should I ?
Anyone have any opinions?

I have the snazzily-named Model 16528000 Kenmore, myself. The only thing it doesn't have is a fast/slow switch, but then I don't use that much myself. I'm too used to being extremely careful with my foot pedal, anyway. I like it. And it's got a 25-year warranty on the head, which is more than I can say for me.
