I have a question for anyone who did better in health class than I did (that would be all of you  ):
My arm got all tingly today, and it hurts to move it. There's a funny indentation in my collarbone... it's about halfway twixt my shoulder and my neck, ... I've never actually had my bone feel dented before... should I worry? Anyone else had this happen? Does it go away?

I don't mean to sound dumb, but are you sure it's in the middle of the bone, and not merely where it joins other bones? And did you hit it on anything? Do you still have full range of motion?

yup. checked a picture of the human skeleton. It's the middle, alright. I don't know...might have hit it on something. My sports bra was digging in rather hard, but no more than usual.
I can still move all around, but when I try to lift my arm up at all, it starts going hurty and then numb.

Okay, I have NO medical training whatsoe'er, but if it goes numb, perhaps you simply crunched a nerve rather than broke something. Either way, if it's not improving, see a doctor.

I just had the same issue this weekend it was possible that you slept wrong on it or twisted while excersicing of something 8)
Its the muscles in the delts that are inflamed some advil and a warm compress should help it out.

It's very possible that you either slept on it wrong or that your sports bra compressed a nerve. DO NOT wear that same bra until you get feeling back, and if the numbness, etc, lasts more than 2-3 days, see a neurologist.

Thank you for the advice. I've been cold compressing it and keeping it immobile. I'll try the warm compress thing. I've still got some 800 mg ibuprofen in the cabinet, so I guess I'll fill my tummy with food and take some.
I got a loan from my parents to help with bills, so if it's not better by Thursday, I'll make an appt. with a doctor.
Mairi- wear it again? I think I'm going to burn the horrid thing. hmmm... synthetic fumes... maybe I'll just put it in the pile of clothes to go "away".
Thanks, again. :grouphug:

If you've hurt the muscles, heat won't make them better. It might inflame something. Grab a bag of frozen peas and ice it for 15 minutes at a time.

another pointless FYI.
it takes 7 lbs to break a collar bone....
But do follow the advice of the wenches here. If it doesnt get better in a few days see a doc.

Only 7 lbs? wow... that's kind of cool to know... the tote bag I carry around campus all the time usually runs -at least- 20 lbs (on a light-book day). Think I'm going to switch to a backpack or something with a padded strap.
I doubt I broke anything (never broken a bone in my life), but I'm willing to bet I bruised something in there pretty good. and I'm rather prone to sprains and strains.

Cold is good at first at the initial impact or reaction of the pain afterwards the warm will relax all tight and strained muscles. But to each there own

Ah, but if you don't know what's caused the damage, heat can sometimes further the problem.

another pointless comment
Ice on nearly anything under 24-48 hours..
after the swelling is gone.. Heat...
that is what my DRs say and my PTs...

The collar bone is naturally curved. If you have a similar indentation on the other side it is probably normal. Even if the indentations are unequal, it could be normal. Most people don't examine themselves closely unless they are injured. Many lumps, bumps and "unusual" shapes may be perfectly normal and just not previously noted.
As to the ice/ heat dilemma, I usually prefer ice x 24-48 hrs then heat. However, the general recommendation from the medicos is just ice for strain, sprains and other such injuries.

Thought I'd give an update. It seems to have mostly healed on its own. (Thank the goddess. I can't afford any more doctor's bills just now.) My arm's still kinda tingly, but I'm adapting, so it's ok. Thank you all for the help and advice.

You know this weekend I slept and rested and all the aches and pains went away. I guess the best thing is just rest 8)
