View Full Version : Losing weight as a New Year's Resolution?

So with the new year, I am starting a DIEt... again. I had a lot of medical issues this past year and was ordered NOT to diet by my doctors. But now that everything seems to have leveled itself out, I am back on the bandwagon.

Anyone else have losing weight as a New Year's Resolution?

not me. I gave up making new year's resolutions. I freely admit I'm weak with my favorite foods and I'll splurge on the "diet" more than what's 'allowed'. So, I just moderate what I eat and excercise 3 times a week... I do a lot better that way than making a resolution to lose so much weight - because I always end up disappointed in myself.

Oh me me me!!! I started Monday. Haven't lost anything yet...but I haven't put aside time to work out yet. I'm doing what worked for me before (and has kept 15 of the 20 pounds lost off!) - the South Beach Diet. Well, it SAYS diet, but really its a new way of eating. It wasn't hard for me to change my eating habits...it was just hard when the chocolate came around in mounds!!!! LOL. Normally I can resist if I have some dark chocolate around (which is allowed in small amounts). SOO...I've started up my Dead Journal again and am keeping myself accountable. :) Good luck to everyone else too! *hugglez*

I don't like the word diet. I am changing my eating habits and then my exercize routine to help with the pounds that I packed on in my stress mode. now that I've hit the big M I know it will be harder to lose than when I lost during my divorce. I want to check in here on a weekly basis to tell of my progress , or not.

Last time I lost I did it slowly by just counting fat grams. first I lost quickly and then tow pound a week for abuot a year.

I gained it back about 6 years later after I remarried and was careless about dounuts and snickers bars.

being forced to resign had something to do with my size as well.

Now I want to get back to healthy. I fell 6 months ago and fractured a vertabre. I know that my weight had something to do with that. Having an athletic husband adds to my shame. He coaches football, wrestling, and is hoping for a spring sport.

wish me luck, I'll need it.

and you reiki wenches, send me some help that way please!

thanks,
bri

I have done well with my weight loss resolution... I am down 21 pounds total as of today. Some of it was water I am sure, but my measurements have dropped too.

Congratulations! This is very exciting news from you!

I hope this also means you are feeling better, yes?

Thank you!
Better in some areas and not so peachy in others. But we think the negative is related to something else other than diet. We hope. But, it's worth it. I just have to up my pain meds a bit.

I have recently started using something called "CortiSlim". It is a dietary suppliment with different herbs, vitamins and minerals. It supposedly targets certain stress chemicals and production and thereby helps to reduce weight. I found it at a local drugstore - (Brooks)
I can tell you that in the week that I have been taking it, my stress levels have most certainly dropped. Things that would have twigged me three weeks ago get nothing but appropriate interest now. A friend of mine started the same time as me and has had similar results. I don't have an accurate scale in the house, but she has lost 7 pounds in the last week. The only thing we can say it doesn't help entirely with is PMS. Ah, well, nothing is perfect.
The product does not contain any caffene, ephedra, or other stimulants. I am very sensitive to them and would be bouncing off the walls. It also does not cause any drowsiness or cloudiness.

My goal is just to be more healthy for me. I want to be in better shape, with more stamina, energy and strength. I also want to trim down, but don't want to "diet". I am changing my lifestyle for the long run, one small thing at a time.

This morning I tried 3 pairs of scrubs before I found 1 that I could wear. I'm up 30 lbs
since July.
A friend called the other day to ask if I would go to weight watchers with her. I think it's
time. We'll be going tomorrow. I reached lifetime goal 15 years ago. I know I will never
see that again, but I at least want that 30 lbs off.
I know exercise would help, but I become a vegatable in the winter.
At least going to weight watchers is a start.

I was told by my doctor to lose weight or be in a wheelchair. I have degenerative disc disease. The doctor put me on the infernal diet, er Atkins. So far I have gone down 4 bra sizes and lost at least 50 pounds. The good news is, I can do a lot more but I still have to watch my back (my lower vertebrae are a bit messed up). So the infernal diet continues this year. I actually managed to maintain my weight instead of gaining during the holidays.

Yeah, like all of us, I need to get my butt off the couch and do something. My family has had some recent heart problems, namely my 52 year old brother almost had a heart attack. His arteries were clogged up and had to have balloon therapy or something done. Then my dad's carotoid (spelling?) artery was 99.9% blocked and had to have it "rotor rootered" out.

My gynecologist just had 9 vials of blood drawn to run all sorts of test on me, what fun. Since I am turning 40 this summer, I need to be in better shape. I would love to get down to 150lbs, just shy of a 40lb loss. I need to learn portion control as well as not to eat because I am bored. Pasta and potatoes are my friends......

There was a simple series of yoga moves in a recent issue of Cooking Light that looked interesting, and it's something I can do at home whenever I can find time. Retail work kills a regular scheduled exercise time. Maybe we can revive the Yahoo group, Weight Watcher Wenches or something like that. We were all gung ho last year, and then petered out over the course of the summer. Let's hope this year is different. :D

I know what you mean. I don't know what to do about eating because of boredom. Anyone has any suggestions?

It's great that you are doing better. I know the feeling, I'll have to watch what I do so I don't hurt my back again. Funny thing is, none of my doctors or therapists have said anything about my weight, but I'd still like to lose a few pounds so I'm not stressing my back more than it needs. I'm using CortiSlim too. Don't know if I'm losing any weight, but it does help with the stress and the urge to eat comfort foods. I haven't been too interested in the new diets, especially Atkins, but am trying to make sure I eat more good foods (minimal processing, more fruits and veggies) instead of junk food, but unfortunately, it seems much easier to just pick something up near the office than cart lunch in from home.

Good luck everyone on their new eating habits and wishes of weight loss!

Not a diet, per se, but I resolved to get into better shape. My MIL "loaned" me her treadmill - they brought it over Saturday - and I've already logged in 3 miles.

I'm currently trying to fit in 15 minutes in the AM and 15 minutes in the PM. I'll up it as it gets routine. :)

I'm trying to lose weight. Sort of. I can be better, but I haven't been as bad as I had been. I'm trying to get back to what I know works for me. More protein, cut the carbs, lots of veggies. Eating sensibly basically.

When I say "more protein" I'm not saying I'm overloading. I'm saying that I eat what I am supposed to eat. I tend to be, as a friend called me, "A tree-huggin' PASTA eater!" which was the worst insult he could have come up with. I'll eat pasta every chance I get. Or used to. So now I try to temper that. I have it when I really really REALLY want it. The rest of the time, I'm eating sensibly.

Okay, so there's the bag of Hershey's sitting here. But I've had it over a month now. And it is not tempting me at all.

Basically I think we have to do what our body knows is right. Some people tend to crave starches, but shouldn't give into the cravings. I do much better when I'm eating the right amounts of food according to the food pyramid. Just don't ask me to put some white crap on my food and tell me "it's just like butter" when it won't melt even if you use a blow-torch on it. I made 1 visit to a nutritionist, when she started talking about that fake butter stuff she lost me.

I did the atkins for about 3 months lost about 15 pounds but the strangest thing has happened to me. The doctor put me on Straterra ( for ADD that I did not know I had) 2 months ago and I lost another 8 pounds. The doctor told me that this might happen but I was like sure. It happened boy was I surprised.

I was following Protein Power which was recommended to me by my friend. I read it and took it to my doctor. I was going to follow it for 1 month. She said 3 months. At the end of it my cholesterol had dropped 125 points. I was eating more or less according to the food pyramid, but making sure that I had at least 4 ounces of protein in every meal. I have a problem with my stomach so I couldn't eat much and was eating 6 to 8 times a day, every 2 hous. Since I couldn't eat much I ate my protein and veggies 1st. Then if there was room and I wanted it I ate the potato or part of the dinner roll.

The thing my friend said that worked for me was that I didn't have to count calories or watch my fat grams. If I wanted butter on something I could have it. I didn't HAVE to give up salad dressing, or mayo. And I didn't. It made a world of difference for someone who fights the very idea of that one 4-letter word that starts with a D.

My niece was on Straterra and she lost about 40 lbs. It is a wonderful side affect of taking the pills for something else.

That was my huge problem I love starches ( potatoes etc.... ) That was the hardest thing for me to stop eating. Not to mention chocolate. I think these high protein diets are just not very good for a person anyway. If you can somehow eat a balanced meal and shave off alot of the calories would not that work?
40 pounds yikes.

Well, it's not to do HIGH protein, it is to eat adequate protein. I found out the hard way that if you do not eat enough protein, you will lose calcium from your bones and they become more brittle, easy to break. I spent 6 months in a walking cast in 1999 because I broke my foot twice. All I did was step on a crack between carpeting and tile flooring in the restaurant I worked in.

Everything in moderation and proper amounts is the healthy way. If someone is a vegetarian they have to learn to eat the right combination of foods to get what they need from what they eat. Like eating avocado, to get the benefit of all the Vitamin E in it, you need to have Vitamin C (drinking OJ or Lemonade) at the same time.

Not eating meat, you have to have dark leafy greens and legumes at the same meal. It's in knowing the right combinations of foods.
