Excellent news: we've had a donation of a custom-made Celtic Pendragon bodice, thanks to the generosity of MaryDane, who will donate custom artwork, and Nicole, who will donate the rest! WOOT! And bless both of you.

I haven't heard from anyone else, though, about stuff they'd like to make and/or donate. The death toll is still rising-- I've seen estimates from 122,000 to 150,000, and it will likely go higher yet. In some places, aid is only now getting through, and only sporadically.

Having said that, this is taken from the Doctors Without Borders site:

A Special Note Regarding Donations for South Asia Disaster Relief

Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has received an extraordinary outpouring of support for the people of South Asia and we are extremely grateful. As you know, it is very important to MSF that we use your contribution as you intend it to be used. This is why we want to let you know that at this time, MSF estimates that we have received sufficient funds for our currently foreseen emergency response in South Asia.

Right now, thanks to the generosity of our supporters, our teams are on the ground providing assistance to people affected by this disaster and carrying out multiple assessments in the region in order to determine how MSF can provide the most effective aid to those in need. We will continue to assess our financial needs as the scope of our operations in the affected areas becomes clearer over the coming days.

We kindly request that you contribute to our general Emergency Relief Fund, which is enabling our quick response to the current disaster in South Asia as well as humanitarian needs in war-torn Darfur, Sudan, and elsewhere in the over 70 countries where MSF is working around the world. The Emergency Relief Fund provides a resource for MSF to draw upon immediately when a crisis occurs, allowing a quick response to events where the speed of our response is crucial to saving lives.

Please understand that your support is very important to us–it is the support of individual contributors like you that is enabling us to send our emergency medical teams and relief supplies so quickly to help the people affected by the South Asia disaster.

I believe most people were in favour of the Red Cross/Red crescent-- all donations to their International Relief Fund will go to Tsunami/Earthquake victims. Also, there's UNICEF, and Direct Relief Internatioal. Again, I'll have our Madame Almoness check everything out.

There are still people who desperately need help, and I'd like to see what the Wenches can do for them.

Hey Nikki, it's not ren related, but I have a barely used Coach purse that I can toss into the mix. It should be good for about $50-$75. What do you think?

Ysobelle
01-02-2005, 11:32 AM
Hell, yeah!

Anything will help the cause. And I'm rather partial to Coach myself. Purr....

Okay, off to work for me. I'll be back tonight!

ETA:

Send text and photos to Rho, she'll organise the auctions. Everyone's going to be responsible for the eBay fees, but that's all. Buyers will pay shipping. I believe that's how it all works, right? Okay, NOW I'm going!

I think I'll send my DM an email and see if my company would cough up something to auction. We do donation stuff quite frequently throughout the year. I don't know if they will go for the ebay thing, but it's worth a shot. BTW, I work for Le Creuset, any of you serious cooks will know the stuff..... and if you watch the Food Network, anytime you see one of the chefs using brightly colored pots, that's my stuff!!

Ysobelle, I sent an email to you and Rho this morning. The addy you gave me for Rho bounced. I fiddled with it on an off chance it was missing a letter.

Could y'all please confirm you got the info!
Thanks!

01-02-2005, 11:38 PM
I know Rho is most certainly in bed right now, but if you want to get the info to her, PM it to her here, she checks here almost all the time, and I wil make sure to call her tomorrow to make sure she checks it.....

and the spelling should match her user name here....those freaking i's in it mess me up constantly...

I got it, and I probably screwed up royally when I sent it to you. Those photos are great-- thank you!

And yeah, Rho will be checking email and the board tomorrow. Onward and upward!

Relatedly, has anyone been checking the photo galleries on the Washington Post's site? The most unintentionally terrifying picture they posted today was concerning the tourist trade slowly beginning to stabilise there, and they have a shot of an enormously rotund vacationer on the beach-- in a tiny black speedo. Shudder.

Of course, the photo immediately following it is of emergency workers putting dry ice on corpses to keep them from rotting until DNA tests can be made. Kind of puts it all into perspective, doesn't it?

Caitriona

I have gotten the PM's and the emails. Betty could you please send me copy and a pic of your bodice.

I'm sorry I was off line for a few days, it was a much needed break.

I'm hoping to get all of the auctions listed by the end of the week.

Article for the day: a wealth of information about how and where to donate, from an online chat with Washington Post's philanthropy reporter, Jacqueline Salmon:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A45017-2005Jan3.html

A lot of the questions I've had have been answered here.

Also, I know this has to have crossed some people's minds: all the animals left homeless and family-less. I don't know that I want all our money to go here, but I thought everyone might want to be aware of it:

http://bestfriends.org/allthegoodnews/tsunami_relief_fund.cfm

Rho, how's it going on your end? Yes, I know I owe you text.

MaryDane
01-05-2005, 12:41 AM
I've been working in Disaster Recovery for almost 10 years, and I don't know how many animal stories I've heard. (If you know anything about me and the recent drama I've been through with my kitty (who is at home and well), you'd know how much of an animal lover I am!)

Rescue efforts are typically intended for people, however over the years we've learned that many people (especially the elderly) will stay right in the middle of a path of disaster in order to be with their loved ones - their pets. More rescue efforts have had to accept pets in order to save the people. Same goes for shelters. Many people wont evacuate to shelters because they can't take their beloved furry family members with them into the shelters. More shelters have become pet friendly too. But not enough.

My heart always goes out to these stories, but the rescuing and saving people is priority.

Yso... is it possible for you to quote the article here? I know, I'm weird, but I have this 'thing' about registering for a site that I'm only gonna use once or twice.

Or better yet, perhaps a PM of it, to not bore the others on here who already have read it?

I will add to the auction an Italian day gown made by Cloth of Gold. I get someone to take some pictures of it tonight for the posting.

If someone would pm me the details I am happy to join in the effort.

I will get to the Coach purse stuff soon, I promise. Had to make an emergency trip to Erie last night to help out a friend in need, and had my annual "poke and prod" at the gynocologist today who then sent me for a battery of blood tests due to family history.....9 freakin' vials of blood!!!!!

But I digress. I have a 1 on 1 with my District Manager tomorrow to see if Le Creuset can donate a piece of cast iron or something. I am also going to dig through my stuff and see what else I can come up with..... I know I have some things hanging around the house that I can donate. Early spring cleaning!!!!!

We are also having a stitch and bitch on the 15th so I'll post to our yahoo group for Pittsburgh and see if anybody has anything else to donate.

What's the plan on how long the ebay thing is going to be done? Is there a deadline for when you'd like to have all donations received by or is this going to be an ongoing thing?

By the way, Alianne, I might have to try the half-Nelson.

Ok, I'll kill a couple of questions with one post -

Ysobelle - I got your copy. It needs to be modified it's way too long for Ebay and your link will have to be removed or ebay will yank it.

Alianne - Great - you know the email addy.

Ariel - Prayers, blessings whate'er is your cuppa tea would be most appreciated.

Bonnie S. - I will most likely make a whole other topic with the links to the auctions. Our Ebay account is Local9_Charity

I hoping to have everything posted by the end of the weekend. Ysobelle - can you ping Betty about her donation?

And I can't say anything about the mystery donation...

Well, this is a charity about a major news item. So...yes and no. I also get the sinking feeling that not as many people read the Charity forum as the Hangout, which is why I didn't post in the former in the first place.

Maybe we should keep the Charity forum for charity ideas that aren't tied to major events, as most aren't? I mean, such things as an AIDS walk or MS marathon are charitable in nature, and this isn't. Does that make sense, or am I making a false distinction?

webmistress
01-08-2005, 12:57 AM
No no, not at all. I have been going back and forth on that as I have been tidying up. I know not as many people read the charity forum, but thats also partly because that forum is way less active.

That said, we can certainly keeping the donation-related news stuff here. I guess the criteria can be - its is something that an individual can do to help out with a current event crisis, it goes in In the News. If it is something the guild can work on as a group, it goes in Charity. Make sense?

I only have info from Ysobelle, pendragon and The secret donor. Yes I will say who eventually, but not yet.

So if you are donating and I haven't gotten your info yet, PM me for my email addy and let's get this going..

01-11-2005, 06:57 PM
Well, I have been given te yes on this, so I will post it here!!!

We have received a donation from a mystery donor!

I did not want to reveal anything until we knew for certain that every thing was set in order, and it has!!!

Four of the doantions going onto ebay to benefit the Tsunami Victims will be.....

* a membership to the IWG (Wench's Guild)

* a membership to the IFoRP (Privateer's Guild)

* a membership to the IBRSC (Rogue's Guild)

* a membership to the Renaissance Mercenaries (RenMercs Guild)

All these will be auctioned off individually on ebay and the proceeds will benefit the Tsunami Victims as noted above.

These were all donated from the man himself Lars. Thanks Lars!

Thanks for being so patient on this while we got it all taken care of.

Caitriona will be putting these on ebay very soon as the copy questions have now all been anwsered!

So now get your bidding fingers ready, and bid often and bid high and lets raise a bunch of money and help these people out while buying some nice stuff for ourselves!!!!

Any news on the E-bay auctions?

Funny you should ask..

I finally have the information from:

Ysobelle - corset
MaryDane and Pendreagon - a Celtic Tooled Bodice
Lars - a packet from IWG, IBRSC, IFoRP, and Merc.

I'm hoping to get these up tonight. If not I'll do it at lunch tomorrow.

Anyone else who has a donation, if you can get it to me by EOD today I'll list it with this batch. If you can't do that then asap. I'd like to post a second batch before ebay raises their rates on 2/18!!!

Thanks to all who donated!!! And for those of you looking to bid - bid high!!!

Rho-- did we say seven day auctions? And "All profits will go to the Red Cross International Disaster Relief Fund." Once I know how much the total fees are, I'll know if I can throw them in, as well.

Also, folks: if you do want to send something, I wrote an intro paragraph about the IWG and who we are, so you don't need to worry about it in your text. If you were going to in the first place, of course.

Bid early, bid often!

And honesty forces me to admit that I'm actually curious to see what happens with one of my corsets. I've never auctioned one before.

Yes, Y's corset was pulled. Ebay didn't like that it's listed as a Tsunami Charity.

An email from ebay told me the following:

However, your listing was in violation of eBay's listing policies. We
would like to take this opportunity to let you know what part of your
listing is not allowed.

eBay encourages community members to be active in supporting charitable
endeavors. Because charitable fundraising is a highly regulated area
subject to numerous state and federal laws, eBay has partnered with
MissionFish to make charitable listing easy and has created very specific
guidelines for when charitable solicitations will be allowed on eBay.

If the other listings get pulled - Stay calm! I'll re-post them on Monday Morning.

I'm sorry for any issues, I didn't know that E-bay would have an issue me using the Tsunami in my title. I do understand why, since they don't want anyone to take advantage of such a horrendous tragedy..

Humbly yours...

I don't mind at all. The more people we can get interested, the better it will be!!!

I am VERY happy right now. This is much, much more than I could have done by myself. And we have a few days yet to go! I've had some folks saying they'd still like to get involved: please, by all means, let us know if you have something to donate. The more the merrier. Perhaps, once the Red Cross stops taking donations for this particular cause, we can choose another charity: UNICEF or Direct Relief.

Wenches just freakin' rock.

Hmmm... I'm really hopping that the leathery thing is from an MD wench and her Hubby... not that she's offering the sketch, a leathery thing, AND her hubby!
