I just heard on the NBC Nightly News that an orphaned 1-year-old baby hippo has been "adopted" by a 150-year-old giant tortise. The hippo seems to behave as if the tortise is its "mother," and the tortise protects the hippo and cares for it in a very motherly way.
It's good to know that there is still beauty in a place where it's so hard to find.
They also said that many charities are getting "too much" money for this disaster. Doctors Without Borders have quit collecting funds for the moment for this particular disaster (as has already been mentioned on these boards) and the Red Cross said that they plan to stop collecting funds for the time being as well when they reach $400 million soon.
In other news, my friend Rohan (who is Sri Lankan/Scottish) has a 70-year-old uncle who was swept away by the waves. He grabbed on to what he thought was a log, then proceeded to pass out. A day and a half later, he was found and taken to a hospital in Columbo. They asked him if he knew what saved his life. He replied, "I grabbed hold of a log." They told him that he was wrong. He climbed aboard a crocodile that had been washed out to sea with the tsunami (which killed the croc, unfortunately) and had been found holding to its body.
Wow.
