I know I'm not the only knitter in the IWG. Hope this is the right place to post this... :)
The newest issue of Knitty came out (http://www.knitty.com) and the opening page has something that I think would be fabulous to make for cold-weather faire garb. It's an edged cowl, and I think that combining that with a half-moon cloak would look so wonderful! I've got it on my list of "things to make for MDRF". Anyone want to make one at the same time with me, and we can share notes on progress?

You know - a long time ago, I learn how to knit. Or, well... I sort of learned how to knit. I could knit the hell out of things, as long as they were in a straight line. LOL I think everyone in my family got a scarf for Christmas the year I learned. Havent really done it in 10 years tho. LOL

Oooh! Thanks for the post! I think a subscription to Knitty is in order... and once I do, I'll join the knitalongs! :)
(So far, the publications that are even in this century (or close to it! ;) are Stitch N' Bitch and Stitch N' Bitch Nation. I just began knitting a month ago, and I'm making GREAT progress, even though I only have one fully working hand at the moment! LOL!)

Very cool--I made a cowl/hood this winter (with matching wrist warmers) from brown toned Light and Lofty. I just did a garter stitch, since the yarn is so textured. I really like that diagonal cable though (hmmmm--plotting). I had thought that the hood and wrist warmers would be nice on those last chilly mornings at KCRF (especially since my cloak is brown)
Great link, thanks!

I *just* learned how to knit; my rogue taught me how! :)
Of course, I can only do a knit stitch, but I can make some GREAT scarves, pot holders, tableclothes, basic blankets.... *hehe*
Can't wait to learn the pearl stitch then move on to more difficult stitches.... sounds easy enough, but I'm a lefty and my rogue is completely a righty....

If you don't have the book Stich N Bitch by Debbie Stoller, I really think you'll love it. I'm a new knitter, and this came highly recommended to me. It's a knitting Bible!

Best thing about knitty... no subscription required! it's a free 'zine that updates quarterly, give or take :)

I only know the "knit" & "perl", but I have fun with them.
I've got a couple of afghans & a scarf in the works, but with my hand damage, I can only do a row or two at a time before I have to go get the ice pack. Something about the movements make my tendonitis flare up. Hopefully, this afghan'll be done before next winter. ^_^

I dont knit or know anyone who can teach me so I figured I'd pass this along to anyone interested. For all you piratey gals out there, this could be rather cute to make (I wish I could crochet this)...

I'll bet there's a yarn store near you where someone would love to teach you to knit!
Knitting and crocheting are great therapy for me :)

This site has a free online video that will teach you how to knit. I had part of it down from a book but couldn't get the "purl" part. After watching this it seemed SO easy! :) The only thing I had to do was reverse what I was seeing since I'm left handed...

When my mostest favorite aunt passed, I inherited her knitting machine. I also knit by hand.
If anyone has experience with the blankety, blankety, blankety knitting machines, drop me a line. This thing is kicking my tuckus.

I just learned to knit recently and have been making legwarners and wrist warmers and things for fridgid festival mornings. I LOVE knitty.com too! What was the page where this half-moon cloak was? My hubby is going to be joining me on circuit and he's gonna need warm stuff for those cold mornings.
I'm a NYRF playtron and this thread got me to thinking.... any reason why we couldn't have a ren-faire stitch-n-bitch during the season. Doesn't *have* to be every weekend, but it could be fun every-other weekend or so. Just a thought, what do you think?
