This includes non RPG and old PC, Nintendo or Apple games, for all us old farts who still remember typing in instructions to Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy or have spouses who spent inordinate amounts of time playing M.U.L.E. with their bestest school buddies. :)
I'm relatively a late comer (but maybe not anymore...hard to be objective about these things) so my first addiction was:
1. Civilization. I had to stop when all my dreams started to manifest themselves in box shapes. Baaad situation. Favorite line: "Gandhi demands the secret of internal combustion!" OK, I'm paraphrasing. It's been over ten years. Sue me.
here are the rest in no particular order...just as I think of them:
2. Betrayal at Krondor! Da daa dada daaa da daa da daa dada daa da daa da daaaaaaaaa. Sweet Monkey Jesus, I loved this game. Drew maps of all the areas, developed a secret language around it with my Rogue, kept him awake late into the night (we were still in a tiny studio with barely enough room to walk around the futon) with my tapping at the keyboard...*happy sigh*
3. Torment (Planescape). Perhaps the best RPG game ever. The box design sucked so it didn't do well in stores. Favorite line: to many to name here. Some hard core fans created a site with sound bites of all the characters speaking their lines. Soooo fun!
4. The Longest Journey. Great story. Beautiful. Can't WAIT for the sequel.
5. Roller Coaster Tycoon. Have to get the new one, as it finally implements all the things I wished the first one had, but the technology still wasn't up to snuff.
6. Xenogears. Again, incredible story, great characters, very cool game play. Early game, so none of the slick animation of the later Xenosaga, (which was also fun, but didn't have the epic feel of Xenogears IMHO) but damn...very fond memeries of that game.
7. Suikoden III. No, I haven't played the others. Yet. And no, I haven't picked up the new one. Yet.
8. Final Fantasy X. You all know. 'nuff said.
9. Dungeon Keeper. Pure gaming satisfaction. You play the demons and get to build your own version of hell. And, well, exploding chickens. What more could you want out of a game?
10. I'll keep this one open...the next Final Fantasy game is due out soon, after all...
Your turn!
:D

These are not necessarily in order, but these are the ones I think on fondly. Halo and Dungeon Keeper are probably tied for #1.
1. DUNGEON KEEPER! (I thought I and Foxglove were the only 2 that remembered that game!!) ~PC
2. Diablo II ~PC
3. Super Mario Bros. That's what got me in to gaming! ~Nintendo NES
4. StarCraft ~PC
5. HALO and HALO 2. Absolutely, without question, the best addiction I have had in years. ~Xbox
6. Blood Rayne ~Xbox
7. Sonic the Hedgehog ~Sega Genesis
8. Creatures 2 ~PC
9. QUAKE! (and Quake 2 and Quake Arena) ~PC
10. Tetris. That thing is freakin' addicting as hell. I ruined my eyesight on it. ~original Nintendo Gameboy

2) Galaga.. how is that one pronounced, anyway? ga-LA-ga, or GAL-a-ga?
3) Frogger was funny
4) Q-bert... oh my I hated the durn snake

I think I'll be a bit more LARP and RPG intensive than most, but I'll try to remember my Atari 5200.
1. Garou: Love it. DCH4 was right, I should have been playing this game along time ago. My main character died at ICC, but I'm back with a new one and I can't wait until the new system is out!
1 (tie). Rifts: Where else can you be an elven psychic with a rail gun? With a good GM, this one is a blast!
3. D&D: 2nd ed. 3rd ed. 3.5 ed. I don't care. Chaotic Good Elven Ranger baby!
4. Flight 42: Homemade system. The only thing you needed, was to know why your character was on a trip to Bermuda. In the games we played we had a porn star turned priest, "Cat" from "Red Dwarf", a shell shocked drill sgt., a professional Vollyball player, an amature politician, a hairdresser, a self narrating detective, a reporter trying to outrun a voodoo curse, a drug mule, a kleptomaniac 7-11 clerk, a russian Tyd-bol salesman and a meteorologist who couldn't forcast the weather. On one plane, going to bermuda. The goal of the game is to crack up the GM. I always left wheezing and drying my eyes because I laughed so hard!
5. Vampire: The Requiem: So many Covenants, so many bloodlines, so little time.
6. Fading Suns: Loved it. Didn't get to play it enough, but had a blast while I did
7. Apples to Apples: It's official, I'm addicted. o much so that I might take it to the NCRF pre-Faire gathering, just so I can play it with Dani.
8. Trivial Pursuit: Just give me a bottle of Ballatore, and I'm a whiz. Yes, I can play all 5 editions.
9.Cranium: Clay and charades, and Pictonary and sing along??? Best game wioth a group /ever/!
10. Q-bert: I /loved/ this game. I don't know how many hours I spent playing.

3) Alice
4) System Shock 2
5) Doom series
6) Half Life
7) Tribes 2
8) Zelda - first three for NES and SNES
9) Sim City
10) Galaga (I've always pronounced it GAL-la-ga)

1) PIRATES! (Did you know there's a new version out these past three weeks and it ROCKS?!)
2) Ultima. All of them. The ending of #9 made me cry.
3) Thief. All of them.
4) Wheel of Time.
5) Need for Speed II.
6) Simcity 2.
7) Simcity 4.
8 ) Heroes III.
9) AD&D 2nd edition. 3rd edition sucks hardcore.
10) Just got Halo 2 -- I'm putting it in, even though I haven't played it, because it HAS to be good.

In no particular order:
1. Dungeon Keeper & Dungeon Keeper 2 (pc)... Man, I love slapping chickens. The "squack" and the little puff of feathers just cracks me up. heehee. And designing dungeons. I haven't beaten either, but I've played the level with the gems about 50 times, varying my dungeon design.
2. Zork (C64)... I miss text-based... never could get past the dratted maze, though. I kept turning a corner and getting killed by a dwarf with an axe.
3. Impossible Mission (C64)... This is another one I didn't get a chance to beat. hmmm... maybe I should try pestering Dad into loaning me his C64... it's just gathering dust...
4. Zelda (Nintendo), the very first one. It's a classic for a very good reason: it's fun!
5. Black & White (pc) Who doesn't like being a god with a big, loving, pet that casts spells? I like getting the horse to turn into a unicorn, while I be all evil to the villagers (when it's not looking).
6. the King's Quest series (except for the last one that was all 3D and annoying)... They were witty, silly, and the puns made me groan/laugh often... some of the puzzles could be nigh unto infuriating with their complexity, (especially if you accidentally do something out of order), but they were still good clean fun.
7. Roller Coaster/ Zoo Tycoon (pc) They're not too much different in the style of addiction, but days have vanished while playing these games. I especially like the wealth of animal-related information in the Zoo Tycoon game.
8. Eternal Darkness (GameCube) I've beaten this about 8 times now, and I still want to play it just one more time... I like the combination of good story with challenging gameplay, and the fact that it makes you figure out what to do to leave the level, without a time limit. Also, this is one of the few 3D games that doesn't make me motion-sick. Hooray for good frame rates! For best gameplay, play in the evening, with the volume up high and all the lights out, for extra spookiness.
9. Agent USA (C64) This game was supposed to help kids learn the state cities and capitals, and the gameplay strongly appeals to my obsessive-compulsive side. ^_^ Aliens had invaded earth (little fuzzy blobs) and were turning people (little black hats with feet), and you (a little white hat with feet) had to gather "crystals" to turn them back and eliminate all the aliens. Much of the game involved riding trains and knowing which ones went where.
10. Gauntlet, Legends (DreamCast) Lots of characters to choose from, gold to gather, zombies to beat on, and accolades. There's fun bonus items that make you grow or speed up, etc. Plus you get the fun of hearing "green archer needs food badly" when your health is low. Joy!
Wow... I hadn't thought about some of these in a while. Thanks for the nostalgia trip, leela! :smooch:

Theresa...Pirates is DEFINATELY coming home soon...saw this in EB games and it's been getting some pretty enthusiatic reviews. And, its PIRATES.
Daelyn, :D re: chickens. I nearly aspirated the first time I sent that gory effeminate claw to spank the first chicken. Talk about losing days.
And I totally lost many to RollerCoaster Tycoon as well. My favorite ride of mayhem worked perfectly in the test run...spectacular drop off the side of a cliff, followed by a hairpin turn into the tunnel in the side of said cliff. So I opened it to a huge response, tons of my little playtrons packed the first cars, it took off...and then, well..physics happened. The additional weight sent the cars, not into the welcoming terror of the cliff tunnel, but into a glorious arc flying off the end of the hairpin turn into the sea. Drowning playtrons everywhere. Oh the horror. I couldn't stop laughing for a half an hour. My Rogue STILL teases me about that one.
Re: nostalgia trip...You are more than welcome! :D
Oh and if ya'll haven't picked it up already...Katamari Damacy. Absolutely addicitve. You have this funky ball, see...and stuff sticks to it...

Get it get it get it as soon as you can! It just blows me away, the extra missions and fun little things thrown in. I am completely interested in this game. I got the very last one in the fifth game store I tried after its initial release, right in time for my birthday. It's so very faboo! :)

Hee hee...it's PS2, it's straight out of Japan, only $20, and one of the craziest games I've ever had the luck to play. Basically, you roll the ball around a house, neighborhood, town (each level you get more and more space to roll around in) to pick up as many things as you can...starting with thumbtacks, small caramels, little plastic fish containers of soy sauce, whatever is lying around the house. The more you pick up, the bigger the katamari (ball) gets, and it picks up bigger and bigger objects (household appliances, woks, small pillows, small animals... the possibilities are, well, endless!
And the makers have DEFINATELY read "The Little Prince".
Really. Seek out the experience. It will make you one with the universe... (you'll get that last cryptic statement when/if you check out the game)
Oh...and the soundtrack is fabu, too.

Don't worry Phoenix, some of us (like me!) can show you how young you really are!
My dad gave my sister and I a subscription to a computer magazine that gave you the code (in Basic) to type into your TRS-80 with cassette tape drive (woo-hoo!) to run games. Except they never ran, because there was always at least one type in the magazine, so you spent countless hours de-bugging the silly thing before it would play. Just remember, these graphics are all ASCII all the time! My favorites were:
1. Paravia - Great game! You start as a lord or lady and have to feed your serfs and build your town (from factories to palaces and cathedrals). The first one to be crowned King or Queen wins (naturally).
2. Rogue - General RPG-type game. Wander about and kill things until you find the magic amulet to get you out of there. Took years of trying before I actually won the stupid game.
3. Larn - Another RPG-type game. Much better. No instructions so you have to figure them out on your own, but after you win you can play at a more difficult level.
4. Star Trek - Cult Classic!
5. Everest - You have to hire a sherpa and climb to the summit. You actually managed to die of starvation or exposure about 90% of the time. Cool!
Scary thing is ... I have found the first three of these for my Palm Pilot! And each one is only about 100K of memory!
Then I had some games that ran on my IBM PC Jr.
6. Anyone remember Leather Goddesses of Phobos? (Still have the original box, clues, and 3D glasses!)
7. How about Neuromancer (way before Matrix)?
8. There was one called Lounge Lizard Larry (or something) that had a whole series.
9. There was a great castle fantasy game I had on my old Mac, but don't even remember the title.
10. Diablo and Diablo II
Haven't had the time to pick up anything new, so thanks for all the suggestions!

Leela-- You have an intrigued me. I'll look this game up tomorrow while we're out shopping. (Weather willing. Dratted snow.)
Morrigan-- Your "pipes" game sounds an awful lot like the old "waterworks" card game... Would you know where himself downloaded it from? I miss Waterworks...

I've never been much of a gamer but There have been those games that I've gotten addicted too.
10. The Sims/Sims 2 - Way too addictive and almost scary what you can make those sims do. I really need to get my own life with this one sometimes.
9. Betrayal in Antara. I haven't evengotten to play the whole thing. it was my friends game and we only made it a quarter of the way through.
8. Myst. Beautiful, challenging, made me want ot go rule my own island.
7. SimTower I've played this one so many times. Its my favorite Sims game.
6. Mario 64- Loved the graphics and it was the first game I got hooked on on the '64.
5. Poke'mon (gameboy) I think they must have sent subliminal messages or something because I had to cath them all. Twice. Severly addictive.
4. Shivers/Shivers 2- Very fun puzzle games that throws in some fairly accurate info on the "strange and unusual." Its almost like a haunted Ripley's Belive it or Not!
3. Paper Boy- Still can't get past Tuesday but I love knocking all that stuff over!
2. Zelda Ocarina of Time. It might of taken me four years to beat the first boss without help from my brothers ( I could do the others no problem) but I love that game so much!
1. This might sound cheesey but #1 is: Think Quick. I had this when I was little and spent so many hours playing by myself or with my brothers. I still am trying to hunt down a copy.

Yes! :!: That was it! Oldies but goodies. I still seem to prefer games that are more like puzzles than most of the new games seem to be, plus you mostly have to use your imagination for what things look like and how to get where you're supposed to be going.
