View Full Version : Talking over songs

Twice in a day, different DJs talked over the beginning and end of songs I like. Why the heck do they do that? I listen to music radio to hear *gasp* music, not their mindless gabbing.
This practise just seems like ego to me. Are their listeners who like it? If not, why keep doing it?

I think it sucks but technically they can talk up to the point where the vocals start. If it's a song with a long musical intro...that's a lot of talking. As far as coming in at the end...it's one thing if it's a song that fades out gradually but it bugs the crap out of me when they do it to a song that has a definite solid ending!

It bugs the crap out of me when DJ's talk over song intros. On the other hand, I seem to remember that there was some show on in the late 70's/early 80's where DJ's were competing and one of the things was to get "x" amount of talk in during a song intro. I'm thinking it was either Dance Fever or Solid Gold.
(Yes, I'm that old!!! :star:)
I'm always for less talk...more music.
I rarely listen to the radio because I can't stand the commercials or the fact that most of them play the same 10 songs every hour.

It's not enough that the DJ's talk over the music, they seem to think that their mindless pratter is actually better than the music. The only station barely worth listening to in the Phoenix area is the classical music station and even though their DJ's do not talk over the music, they do have an overinflated opinion of themselves and their cleverness. They also feel obligated to comment on the music before and after. Like I really give the north end of a south bound rat what their opinion is? I won't go into the obnoxious pledge breaks other than say I would rather have commercials.

Even better......WTCD!!!! (W Tink's Compact Discs)
In other words......I listen to CD's most of the time.
OR classical radio, which has way less ads it seems.
This is why I have XM satellite radio. No talking over music.

I am in my car a lot driving home to Michigan, so I decided to get serious and got Sirrus Radio. It's great. Not commercials and I like the 70's music with Greg Brady. Ya, I'm that old too.

How do you like XM? My hubby wants Cirius, since that's where Stern is, but I don't know anyone who has either, so I don't know if its worth the money in service and equipment.

I know many people who swear by either XM or Cirius, especially those who do distance driving frequently.
Personally, I'm stuck in an old-fashioned groove that says radio should be free. But, the worse the programming gets around here, the more I think about changing.
One concern I have is that a few of the stations do have ads now, just very limited compared to AM/FM broadcasts. If one has to pay for the service, it should not contain advertising (no, I don't have cable TV, either).

My husband is a private investigator, and as such, he winds up driving extraordinary distances fairly often. (Last week, he drove to New Mexico and back - about 12 hours each way.)
I have to look into the costs, but I know he misses Stern.

I miss the way FM radio used to be in the early 70's. (I too, am that old)
DJs were very low key. No chatter, low voices between well thought out sets to let you know what you were listening to.
I listen to CDs more than the radio. Partly because of the chatter and partly because of the limited play lists.
Even when they are playing music by artists that I like, It is usually the same songs over and over.

The thing that buggs me is that the music is out numbered by the commercials!
Ugh and there is not much of a radio market up where I live so there is only 1 or 2 stations that I listen to.

I have to agree with the talk to much and overplaying popular songs, I listen to a variety but the station I listen to here in Houston is a country station and they promise 52 mins of music every hour. They play a range of songs too, like old country (from the 80's, 90's, ect.) and new country. But on the drive to hubby's work in College Station we switch over to a local pop station and they play the new song by usher and Tim McGraw like 3 times an hour. It's horrible. I play cd's a lot too, I like to burn my music, other's buy cd's and I'll borrow them to rip to my computer then burn a mix onto a cd. That way I get what I want how I want it. lol.

Morning DJ's are the worst about talk. Every morning, I have about a half hour commute, but I only hear about three songs. The rest of the time is comericals or their stupid games they do.

I don't like it when they talk over a song- or when I like a song and want to know what it is- they don't tell me and start to talk about a lam song I can't stand!
Although I will admit some of the stuff they say is really funny at times!
