OK, this started as a hair brain "I can make it cheaper than I can buy it" idea. At a store I saw this stuff called 'Linen Water'. It is distilled water sented with lavander, or vanilla or other floral scents. You put it in your steam iron, and when you iron your clothing - viola! Good smelling clothes.

However scent wise, all I have seen are oils and such. I am just not certain where to look for just 'scent' in a non-oil based form.

Any suggestions?

The essentail oils are still good for what you are talking about. When you put it in the water make sure that it is diluted a good deal, or if the oil has some sort of color in it like a strange pink or something the oil will stain. But if you are putting it straight in the iron witht the water use only 1 drop noting more, then it should not cause any trouble for your linens. Also if you mix the essential oil of your choice in a spray bottle with water you can spray it on blankets and cloths that are packed away.

YOu can also rig up a still and distill your own iron water.. thats what I did.

Get a stock pot with a well fitting lid, drill a whole in the lid, make a fitting with a flange, some nuts and copper tubing (its flexible).

You put the water, whatever herb, flower, plant, in the water, put hte lid on, turn the stove on, and direct the copper tubing into a glass bottle of pyrex mixing bowl. NOT plastic, the steam vapor is HOT and will melt your plastic container (I know. TRUST ME).

The steam vapor has the scent in it of whatever you put in it and is safe for the iron, no fear of messing up your iron by getting essential oils in it.

I've made:
Lavender
chamomile
juniper berry
mint
cinnamon
rose
waters all for Iron water, purfume or cooking.

I wonder if a pressure cooker would work? They have the nub at the top to put the ..... I guess dodad (can't remember the name) to keep the pressure high. Abigail, what do you think?

Oh, and on the essential oils, I saw them at the local co-op.

I wouldn't want to mess with a pressure cooker, I've seen what happens when they explode from misuse, and I don't know if you would want to weld a copper pipe attachment onto your pot.

My still is only used as a still. I don't cook in it. Well, I don't cook food in it.

Just my mystery concoctions.

before adding the fragrance oil to the distilled water, mix it with some white alcohol i.e. 90 proof vodka or everclear. the oil will disolve in the alcohol and then mix better with the water, leaving a lesser chance of spotting your fabrics.

If you find that the Lorann oils work for you let me know what flavors you are interested in...we purchase them wholesale (the single dram concentrate lists between $1.19 and $1.25 we pay between .65 and .88 per dram), as well as several other brands (Flavor mill too) and I'd be happy to pass along the discount to you.

oils-

make sure waht you order from whereever is a good quality oil. if they are all the sme price they are not pure stright uncut oils. remember the words pure and natural by themselves don't nessasary mean good.
poo is pure & natural but you don't want it in your oils. lol

if the oil is of a good quality you do not need to use much.
For example our oils are first or at the most second pour (like in olive oil making the top of the barrel- first pressing) not the last pour or dregs like a pyamid oil company i won't mention ;-)
thus you need alot less to ge the scent.

hope this helps
