Greetings All!!

Just had to pop home for a bit so I could fix my buttons. Oy, Mondays

I was at the office doing some computer work when I look down and see a button in my lap. Where did this come from, thinks I. The top button of my jacket. OY. Now have to sew it back on....

The hats were the best finds of the weekend! I'd been needing BOTH a pirate's tricorn and a black cavalier... Friday evening I found a 100% wool hat for $15 that I ripped the leopard print fake velvet band off of and am in the process of sewing lace onto. It's actually kinda cute - everyone in the tents next to me just thought it'd be adorable and the perfect finish to the ditz Candie Violet.

Then, the leather one... oh, so scrumptious... let's not mention the silk purple and teal scarf I found with celtic knotwork... silk and leather and a nice chunk of male pursuing me across the pond. what a day. ~L~

Where's popcorn?? plops down next to Phee and Mags for the show...

Sayth the Wench who kept me awake at court merely by standing in front of me holding a pike... Wonderful scenery.. simply wonderful!

The camera has been returned to my house.. but mayhaps I can ask Lord Stefan to stop by & grab it on his way to therapy...

:P

Hm.. I may just have to start editing this post.. as an alternative to posting afresh!

Ahhhh...yes.... the verbose eloquence of our dear Po...for which a day without his penchment is but a day without....

raindrops on roses, whiskers on kittens, bright copper kettles, warm woolen mittens, or brown paper packages tied up with strings.....

Additionally...

Cream colored ponies and crisp apple streudels, Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles, Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings...

A day without Po'isms...

To Post, or not to Post: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous Wenchdom,
Or to take arms against a sea of swashbucklers,
And by opposing end them?

“They tempt him here, they tempt him there...
Those wenches tempt him everywhere...
with speech and steel and chocolate, so...
what‘s to become of our Rogue Po?”

Hmmm.. for some reason.. I feel like a Wiley Wench...

Ambar...Kibbey, meesa lurves ewe! This pose was actually shot for a photo album we were sending to a couple of platoons we "adopted" overseas.

Biker....are you saying I can take your temperature????

And Po, Morghan and Artos... I would love to see pics of your steel-therapy as well. I sssooo wish we had something like that around here; the best likeness we have are the instruction classes that I hold at my house on the weekends. My group works on stage-combat and brawling only unfortunately. No accredited instructors for more, and most of us are on string-budgets and canna afford to take formal academy lessons, even if we had time.

"If all the young Lasses
were Pirates at sea.....
I'd be the mainmast...
and let them climb me.........."

<<Chorus>>

umm.. what were we speaking of?????! uh- Oh, yeah... Swashbuckling and photography..

Y'know.. I personally think that photos of just a pair of swashbucklers in practice-whites in a tiny room would pale in comparison to a full melee- muliple swashbucklers, arrayed in their finest, oudoors dueling in a parade enviorment.. Therefore I propose holding off on the photos (snap, snap... nudge, nudge... wink wink..) until this weekend's parade-brigade-skirmish? Any seconds?

BonBon- We're also a tiny little group of fanatics.. few of us have had *much* formal instruction in the blade.. but we pool our knowledge.. Lord Stefan contributes sport-fencing classes & period/sca dueling; I contribute stage-combat class experience and period as well... (and we do have others too) - we have a few hiltsmiths and longsword enthusiasts as well.. we're a real buffet of eclectic styles and knowledge..
we improvise out of neccessity...

Well, really the only reason I have a 'claimed' verse is that we sing RYLO when we Walk at MIRF. So, each Wench has her own verse so we don't end up singing the same one over and over.

Ok. Here's my Local 9 Parody - again...

(Feel free to insert either Julie Andrews or Barbra Streisand's voice into the following)

::ahem::

::sings:: Lap dances, whipped cream, and wrapped Hershey's kisses/Cookies, sangrias, and raspberry blintzes/Tall dark and handsome rogues tied up with strings/These are a few of my favorite things!

Corsets and floggers with leather-hide roses/ Red-lipstick marks on the Mt. Hope's Rogues' noses/Empty Hats' Carl in garb plucking his strings/These are a few of my faaaavorite things!

When the boss yells, when the checks bounce, when I'm feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite things, like tall, dark and handsome rogues tied up with strings, and then I don't feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel ::swoon:: so bad!

(As I previously told Lady Sarah, Laneya, et al, feel free to use any and all of this as you guys see fit. Just gimme credit when/if you do)

Sorry Po, I know this is torture for you

And my "favorite" RYLO verse:

Morghan, do I need to re-post my Local 9 version of My Favorite Things?

To add to this thought process....
Ring, ring 911, what's your Wenchy emergency? Are you having Rogue pain? Is a Rogue causing you to have shortness of breath? Have you caused anyone to adjust in public? :faint:

Good morning all. (Heads for the chai while muttering about the missing round cake pan)Today is my youngest son's birthday. And he changed his mind last night about what he wanted for birthday cake. He wanted brownies before. Real simple and quick to do. Now he wants a 3 layer chocolate cake with rich chocolate frosting. The cake layers are baking now.I will make the frosting today after work. He's happy. Mom on the other hand is starting the day off covered in chocolate cake batter. Nothing like cooking from scratch. Got up at five this morning to make his cake.

As much as we, from the north, would be puddles down south, when you head north, better be bringing something/someone for warmth. Even in the midst of summer, if the north wind blows, it's nipply. Last year at Bristol, Saturday was 72 and perfect, then Sunday started out warm but the wind switched and it became blustery, rainy and a whopping 50 degrees. I hate northern weather.

The one time I was at the now defunct festival in Maumelle, AR, it was JUST like that on Saturday morning. The entire setting was on the edge of a manmade lake and it was cool enough that there was mist and that damp feeling of Scotland. A scarlet cloak....sigh!!!! The more I play here, and hear about everyone's garb...the more I grow to resent Bristol and their rules. We are supposed to be more historically accurate than fun. So we have stupid rules about what fabrics and colors and clothes we can wear. I am working with Yo for a corset and I won't be able to walk since we have to have some kind of straps. They are even threatening to not allow us to wear our Pendragon bodices since we are peasant class and could not afford tooled leather or suede. We can't wear any bright colors..no pinks, no purples! I LOVE purple hues. SIGH.

Margaret
03-08-2005, 12:58 PM
That's what I like about MIRF. The 'rules' for dress we have to follow are pretty lax and stuff we can all live with. Bodice, skirts, headcovering. They would like if we would adhere closer to peasant-y colors and such but don't make it an issue.

Lady Sarah
03-08-2005, 01:31 PM
I'd have to complain LOUDLY. Ap, you and I have had this discussion already - YOU are paying to get in. YOU should be able to wear the colors and styles that you want - as long as it's family friendly. If Bristol wants to dictate the attire, they need to put you on cast.

Apropos
03-08-2005, 01:47 PM
In fairness to Bristol, they are talking about giving some of us discounts on the entrance price. BUT not all. And I totally agree with the whole concept of if they want to dictate what I wear, then they had better be paying me, and not just bribing me. They walk around with their whole "Sooo not period" attitude about everyone's garb, but never complain about the $4.50 US DOLLARS that I pay for ale OR all the US DOLLARS I give to the perfomers to help defray their costs OR all the US DOLLARS I spend at the various shops that they allow in but are not period so even if we buy from them, we can't wear them...(Ophelia's and Moressca are hot topics right now). I swear one of these times I am going to pay with a shiling and say.."BUT IT'S SOOOO PERIOD!!!"

I had lasik surgery and the sun now really botthers me. I don't wear a straw hat (which they prefer) I wear garland...which has plastic sparkles in it, so that gets commented on. I wear a black underskirt (we have to wear two) and black is not apropos for peasant class. THAT SUCKS!! I know exactly how you feel. About 6 wks ago I was "given a promotion" and then had it taken away by the end of the day. The BS reason I was given was that my old communications supervisor had been here a while and he was being given the position because it came down from "higher up." Then I was told that I wasn't being given the position because I didn't have extensive training on our main channel (this is because my supervisor who was promoted made the decision NOT to train me...said I didn't need it.) I was told, however, that I would be used to precept new employees. :cuss:

To top it all off...I'm going out of town next week for my son's wedding / coinciding with our spring break...so I'm taking 10 days off from work. I've only had 4-5 days a month off since October -- have been working 12-15 hour shifts (coming in early/staying late). I requested my 4 days of vacation (I'm swapping shift hours to cover other days) back in December and was approved. Now... 10 days before I leave for this fiasco...I'm being told that they can't give me the vacation time...that I need to swap my shifts or come in and work because they can't give me 48 hours (supposedly I can't take the 8 hours without pay). :wah: :cuss: :pfft:

I would NEVER snark to someone about how their garb was not period--that's just BAD form. Sheesh.

I don't think I've ever had anyone approach me with notes on how I was out of period--but when our fair has QE1 and the THREE MUSKETEERS, and Pirates, I figure I've got some room to play.

I mean, yah...my character has an out of period profession...there weren't actually Librarians --not as we know them --at that time, but hey.... nearly all of our stages are miked, including the Joust field. I'm thinking I'm not commiting a really glaring sin here.

Did I miss something? Isn't the point of a Faire is that we're all there to have FUN?

MiRF patrons, on the whole, are there to have a beer and a turkey leg, and to be entertained. A great many don't know the intimate details about the time, the people, so a lot of fluffy backstory is moot. They want to see something at least passably interesting out of our characters, and they don't care if it's silly. In fact, I think they prefer it that way. They expect to JOIN IN, not just watch from afar.

I for one would NEVER exclude anyone for wearing inappropriate garb. Hey, they made an attempt to join in the fun--that in itself is flattering. We've (cast and patron alike) done our job and made it look like fun, and they are trying to join in the game that we have created..

Who the hell am I to burst someone's bubble and tell them they're all wrong? I'd rather praise them for their effort, no matter how historacally misguided it might be.

That said, I will admit to some late night giggle fests looking over the 'renaissance' gowns and stuff offered on Ebay. But the vast majority of hese people are just blindly sewing from a pattern, and then selling it, they aren't wearing it to faire.

Hail and Good Mornin' All!

Yes, yes.. I know.. I can let it out of the bag now..

My Rapier Marshal's *Warrant* is now official. I am now a officially recognized fencing adjudicator for the SCA. All formats, both light and heavy rapier.

(Warning all Local 9 Musettes! I had said we'd need a Marshal to make Philly fencing seminars more official/safe/etc... well. we have one now... )

Our region had limped along for *years* with a single marshal- who also was warranted for (and preferred) other combat-forms.. and therefore he tended to to only focus on fencing when we forced him to at blade-point. Several regional fencers have worked towards a Marshal's Warrant over the past few years- and for some reason they always found themselves delayed...
*Now* I can go back to being the supremely lazy swashBOOKlin' Rogue of old.. because wherever *I* go.. there will *be* a Marshal.. No more frantic phone calls before demos or events... Just show up, flash my Marshal's Baton and Swashbuckle!
:D

Power corrupts.. and a Marshal's Warrant....... feels pretty DAMN good, I can tell thee!

My conspicuous Archer Friend, Eric said...Rapiers are a poor defence against a longbow...

Agreed.. No argument..
But a gentleman carrying a longbow sort of broadcasts the aura of "Hey! I have a longbow!" and is instantly noticed...
..whereas a gentleman with a rapier at his side is par for the course... to be expected.. it's part of the look...

I've said it before... A rapier is primarily designed as a defensive weapon.. keep your opponent/attacker 3 feet away (or more), and threaten him *there*... I *like* that about it.

..and I never claimed to be without a ranged-weapon... just that the rapier is my obsession.

Eric.. my dearest Rogue... don't be jealous.. my brother can tell you.. 2 years ago I took a bad fall and seriously injured my right leg - which I already had a "service connected" disability on.. the injury put me in a wheelchair.. (hence why I have 2 of them here at the house)...

9 months ago I started fencing.. I took it slow - at a pace I thought I could handle.. and not only has it kept me "out" of that chair..(albeit I still have the occasional issue with the leg) it has also been theraputic...additionally, Lord Stefan has extremely bad knees and gets out there - staying within his "own" limits .. the nice thing about rapier - is it is much easier on the body than most other sports.. yet it is excellent exercise (a closet full of lose clothes proves that) - its relaxing yet energizing - and overall.. its FUN :D

Don't give up on it.. at least until you give it a try.... :smooch:

Well I found out today why I should just keep my mouth shut when it comes to having good days. I took the mommymobile back to the darlings that did the alignment on Friday, because they wanted to do some sort of print out that they couldn't do Friday due to the fact the computer fritzed on them. So they asked me to bring it in today. Took it in, the guy asked how it was driving I told him good and then proceeded to ask questions about shaking when accelerating. He said he'd take a look. a few mins later he comes in to tell me that I've got a busted CV Boot. I spent from 9am to 12:30 at the shop, & then I had to wait for my grandparents to come pick me up. We (the two mini's and myself) did errands with my ranch folk grandparents ( I swear it's the funniest thing in the world to hear my grandfather tell my grandmother that he's going to a fully body MEESSSAGE parlour and her to whip out that they'd charge him double because he's a smartass). We got home in time to tell hubby bye and safe journey. And now it's us again all alone. Gosh I hope tomorrow is better.

Hail All!

OK.. all sorts o' responses... Let's see.. ( )

Sarah.. Here are at least three online places showing period RBG's (rubberband guns) for use in SCA Rapier combat... all of them shoot high-tension surgical tubing rings.. and really should only be fired at people who are armored- at least armored enough for fencing. I've not been lucky enough to own or fire one.. nor have I been on the receiving end of a shot.. but I've seen/read/heard enough to believe it. Right now RGB's are permitted in a number of Melee's (multi-fencer situations- not one-on-one dueling) and are ony used at a distance (beyond your rapier's reach- the rule of thumb is: If you can lunch and reach your opponent, you can't fire an RBG at them...)
http://www.bandguns.com/
http://www.sunshadowdesign.com/sca/rbg1.html
http://www.lydia.org/bandgun/
(different styles, prices, degrees of visual prettiness and accuracy...)

Continuing on that Note, M'lady Margaret said :Sound like a nice present for yourself for achieving your new station... Wink
I'll admit being tempted, M'lady.. but I'd want to fondle/compare/examine a few before deciding on what to actually pick up.. so instead I found a *very* nice fencing-themed ring for myself... less expensive than an RPG.. and something I can wear and show off 24/7... (and I'll continue looking at and eventually playing with RBG's until I can make an educated decision)

...and from M'lady Adrianna Rose: I am totaly jelous of all of you that have acess to fencing training!!!!
Hmm... There were a few years when I didn't have ready access to classes/seminars/sparring partners... and while it isn't the best of solutions, I could recommend at least 3 to 6 *good* books to look at.. to familiarize yourself with the mindset.. the terminology.. equipment and garb. and basic body-positions and moves... Let me know... (It's better than nothing at all.... and I'm a bookseller.. so I can b shameless about it!... heh, heh, heh..)

And Artos? I bet if we looked.. we'd find a few obsessive swashbucklers or potential swashbucklers closer to your new stomping grounds... either a college fencing club (like LCCC here) or a SCA group.. or other re-enactors...

Parry!

Ok.. you invoked me.. here you go...

The Arte of Defence: An Introduction to the Use of the Rapier by William Wilson

Actors on Guard: A Practical Guide for the Use of the Rapier and Dagger for Stage and Screen by Dale Girard

Renaissance Swordsmanship : The Illustrated Book Of Rapiers And Cut And Thrust Swords And Their Use by John Clements

Swashbuckling: A step by step guide to the art of stage combat & Theatical Swordplay by Richard Lane

and finally....

The Art and Science of Fencing by Nick Evangelista

Those are only a few.. but they are my favories.. the *core* of my library.. the ones I return to again and again.. (Hey! anyone else want to suggest any books?)

and if you kind gentles will allow me to quote ME from the Local 9 thread...
Hail All!

Ok.. I'm just looking for suggestions... wild-ideas... "If only"s, etc...

EMMF has told me that they hope to use the Steel-Rose village cast to fill some slots in the entertainment sched. --some slots both on the main stage ("G M'lords- G. G. G. [rated]") and also a few at the tavern stage ("*not* G- at all!).

We haven't held auditions yet.. or had a major meeting.. so I don't know what sort of castmembers I will have to play with. but what I'm looking for is "what have you always wanted to see/or perform yourself- if you were given carte blanche and stage-time?"

Hmmm.. singing? swashbuckling? banter? puppetry? I'm looking for inspirations to suggest to the powers-that-be!

Many Thanks!

..and Thanks yet again!

Good Morning all. I'm trying to figure out WHY in the name of the Goddess am I up so damn early in the moring. I went to bed around 1:00a, woke myself up coughing at around 4:00a. Got up to get some water, take some asthma medication & try to go back to sleep. Dad in his infinite wisdom decided to call to the house on Mom's cell phone. He was trying to get her up, I didn't mention that he was in the bedroom with her. So, I was running into the front room to get Mom up 'cause Dad was calling asking to speak to Mom. He didn't get her up, but he did get me up. Since my cat was being rather noisesome I fed him & tried again to go back to sleep. I kept myself awake until 5:00a and decided it was a good reason to get up & get ready for Faire this weekend. Still need to pack up some stuff & load up my car.

Ugghhh!!! :yuck: I'm tired, but I can't go back to sleep. 5:30a-6:00a is really dark.

Nope... I'm with Lady Sarah on this one...

I'm not a morning person- never have been.. but I'm lucky that I've been doing *this* job (at various Bookshops on the east coast) so long that I can trust the "internal autopilot" to get me up, showered, dressed, the young squires to school, and then booksell till noonish when the brain actually kicks in... and the autopilot does it all..

Hell- the autopilot even logs in here and banters for me until I wake up!

Oh well.. until I can get a working "call-box".. its going to be Friday all day today.. followed by.. *argh* the weekend.... :?

Mornin' All
:grouphug:

Mornings only exist as wake-up time to get you ready for the rest of the day. I am a Night Owl. I will come to work at 10:00am with a big mug o' coffee and the stereo blasting until I finally wake up at around 2:00pm. Then it's all downhill. I have been known to work until 9:00pm with no problems. My boss thinks I'm crazy but he loves the fact that I'm here to cover the phones when no one in their right mind would be here.

My hubby is a morning person. His day ends at 4:30pm. By then, he would've had dinner! I keep telling him he is already an old man for winding down at 4:30pm and that's why we should be in Florida already (thinking warm thoughts, thinking warm thoughts). I told him I'll even buy him a pair of white patent leather shoes.

Mags, get Biker to look at the transporter - I bet he can fix it. We could all be with Po right now with big cheescake smiles on our faces! :D

Anywho, got dancing plans this weekend (dons tiara). Going to one of those dance competitions to watch hustle, east coast and west coast swing dancers. I'm even going to take some of the workshops.

Oh, and for those of you in the SCA, I'm working on the new Royal Majesties menu and seating cards for their Coronation. My first SCA event - WooHoo! I hope my beginning calligraphy doesn't cause any laughs.

Why am I still here - I've got to get back to work  Is it 2:00pm yet?

Huzzah!! M'Lady...

My *first* court - the room was so packed you couldn't see anything that was going on - much less breath.. at my most recent Royal Progress (Crown Tourney) - we were part of the Baronial Procession - and to insure all was safe for Their Majesties, Highnesses, and Excellencies - special precautions were taken - to include that no snipers were sneaking around on the roof waiting to pounce. (this was mundanely known as... one of our RWL members accidentially stuck a spear head into the ceiling and became affectionately known thereafter - as "Roof Slayer").

My sis and him just moved in so he thought that it would be nice to get his satellite dish installed. And the guy came at 7 this morning to put it in. So yea we are trying to sell our house and the guy drilled holes every where and Mum has cables running all over her room and my BIL yanked a panel off the wall so that stuff could be drilled. It's a huge mess and Mum is kinda mad at the whole thing.
