Kraft Halts Production of Roadkill Candy

By CHRIS NEWMARKER, Associated Press Writer

TRENTON, N.J. - Production of candy shaped like roadkill has come to a screeching halt. The decision, announced Friday by Kraft Foods Inc., was the result of an outcry by New Jersey animal rights activists who said the candy encouraged children to be cruel to animals.

"We take comments from our consumers really seriously and, in hindsight, we understand that this product could be misunderstood," said Kraft spokesman Larry Baumann.
Kraft plans to stop production as soon as possible and then sell off remaining inventory, Baumann said.
The fruity-flavored Trolli Road Kill Gummi Candy — shaped like flattened snakes, chickens and squirrels, complete with tire treads — hit store shelves across the United States last summer and was supposed to be another offbeat and unusual addition to Kraft's Gummi candy line.
But the nonprofit New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals thought differently. Earlier this week, it threatened petition drives, boycotts and letter-writing campaigns.
Stuart Rhodes, the organization's president, said he never thought his group's efforts would be so successful.
"Did I think it would happen as fast as I did? No. I guess like most people I've become very cynical. All too often it seems that profit rules all. This was refreshing," Rhodes said.
The state of New Jersey designates the NJSPCA the enforcer of its animal cruelty laws. Law enforcement takes up a large part of the group's efforts, but Rhodes has stressed more public advocacy since he took over a year ago.
This is the first time the organization has complained to a company about a product, Rhodes said.
Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. is in the process of acquiring the Trolli brand along with other Kraft candy lines as part of a $1.48 billion deal.

Hmmm. They are concerned about candy looking like road kill because it would encourage children to be cruel to animals? What about gummi worms, bears, and other sort of critter shaped goodies? And let's not forget animal crackers. My boys love to bite the heads off the crackers first. Sounds more like a case of throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Yeah, but those are all happy, cheerful animals they're decapitating. The Gummis are crushed, mangled, and violently mutilated animals. It's a kinda creepy idea for a candy, really. My first thought when I see roadkill is NOT "Mmmm! Dessert!"

Then again, I moved out of Florida years ago.

I know... I am twisted. I liked the Roadkill candy. I used to live in a state where one could pick up the fresh roadkill and take it home for dinner or skins.

Every year when the Easter candy is stacked on the shelves, there are daily and Sunday comics that depict all the different ways people prefer to mutilate chocolate Easter bunnies, websites dedicated to the blowing up or distruction of Peeps, and various other forms of entertainment. But I have yet to see any kids running after bunnies in a park wanting to bite their ears off.

Now if you want to figure out the motivation for the jerk who drove down into the ditch on a rural dirt road to run down my dogs (who waited patiently everyday at the busstop for me to come home - my dad was curious enough to follow them to see where they were going when they started this habit) and stop the production of that, I'm all for that.

But I can't believe that the shape of candy has a greater effect on kids than the violence (or stupidity) of most current cartoons on the TV.

And yes, Psyche, you are a little twisted, but you have to watch what you pick up. One of guys I worked with in grad school found an owl that had been killed by a car and picked it up to give to the taxidermy team. He stopped less than a minute down the road and dropped it off again. Apparently, it's last meal had been skunk.

Goldfish had

"the snack that smiles back, until you bite their heads off..." In their jingle!
