I'm not sure about this karma thing -- how do I get it? Why aren't there always plus signs next to someone's name? I'm confused about that.

Karma's just the online equivalent to a pat on the back. You give someone a Karma point when they say something you like, or do something neat, or just when you particularly feel like it.
