Baby torturers get life in prison

Judge calls it worst case of child abuse he has ever seen

VICTORVILLE • The couple convicted of torturing their 20-month-old daughter were both sentenced on Friday to life in prison — the maximum allowed.

Judge John Tomerlin said it was the worst case of child abuse and torture he has ever seen and sentenced Vanessa Woods, 24, and Riginald Hardin, Jr., 26, the maximum for each of the charges. One count of child abuse carries 6 year, one count of bodily injury to a child carries 6 years and the charge of torture to a child carries a life sentence. The couple was also given 8 months on a car theft charge.
Tomberlin sentenced them to serve the 12 years and 8 months, and then the life sentence will begin. They will be eligible for parole seven years into the life sentence.

During the December trial, an emergency room physician testified that “Baby Woods” most severe burns were around the anus and that most of the skin was gone from that area.

Dr. Amy Young-Snodgrass, a forensic pediatrician at Loma Linda University Medical Center testified that both of her feet had third-degree burns up to the ankles, with second-degree burns in the calf area.

The doctor also said the baby’s abdomen was grossly extended, with bruises covering her entire abdomen, and she had burns to her chin and bleeding in the white portion of her eyes.

Since the tragic story of Baby Woods broke in January 2008, numerous Victor Valley residents were been moved beyond cynicism to acts of love and compassion. Some local residents have offered to adopt the toddler. Others have been inspired to become foster parents.

OMG..how could anyone be that cruel. Being a mom of a 21 month old it just makes we want to vomit. Actions like that are never justified. They deserved to rot in a cell. But it is reassuring that good people are stepping up to be loving caretakers for this poor little girl.

What they briefly touched on isn't the half of it. The how of the anal area (in and out) make me sick. If I remember correctly, she had to be in a drug induced coma for quite a while. I wish they had gotten death.

OMG, the baby lived? She must have had angels watching over her. I pray she grows strong and lives a great life.

Who do you have to be to do that to a baby?

Personally I don't think they should get death.

Let them serve their life sentences and every six months send in a large nasty man with tools to perform the same things on each of them that they did to that baby...and only treat them enough to let them live so that in six months it can be repeated ad infinitum....and then hope that their level of hell accords them the same for eternity...:rip:

poor baby. I hope this lil baby heals and finds a reason to smile.
Too many are hurt for stupid reasons. It was stories like this that inspired me to foster. I had one lil man who was beaten silly with a game controller cord for standing in front of the tv. He healed, grew into a strapping toddler and smiled all the time. But everytime I bathed him, I'd see the thin white scars striping his back and have to quiet my rage for his parents. One day he would have to explain those scars to a lover. How cruel.

Holy s@@@ the kid lived! Lets hope she doesn’t remember anything that her parents did to her. I’ve got to agree with Isabelle, angles, heck she had a platoon of angles watching her.

There is a special dark place in the deepest pit of Hell for people like that.

That poor baby - I hope she heals and grows up strong.
