Chris Walters writes about Facebook's new terms of service. 'Facebook's terms of service (TOS) used to say that when you closed an account on their network, any rights they claimed to the original content you uploaded would expire. Not anymore. Now, anything you upload to Facebook can be used by Facebook in any way they deem fit, forever, no matter what you do later. Want to close your account? Good for you, but Facebook still has the right to do whatever it wants with your old content. They can even sublicense it if they want.'"

A number of the local wenches nearly had me ready to sign up on Facebook, but I'll have to rethink after they pulled this one. I heard this morning that they changed the TOS without prior notice, so they didn't give anyone the chance to close their accounts if they didn't agree with the change. I have a feeling there will be a class-action suit on this.

I recently signed up with Facebook (peer pressure!) but I actually trust Myspace more than Facebook. Myspace may be a virus den but that is something that can be mostly avoided with pop-up blockers, a good anti-virus program, a unique password and denying posts in html. Not so in Facebook.

I'm curious about the applications in Facebook. To use them, I have to grant them access to all my information. One of the applications have to do with groups. If I want to join a group I have to grant the application permission to view my information. Why a group application needs my information - and my friends information - is beyond me. I believe I can edit these permissions but I have no idea if I have an option to deny complete access to my information and still use an application. As far as I know, Myspace doesn't require access to personal information to join a group.

Facebook is a very powerful program. It has alot of features I use, especially the rss feeds. I'm not paying for it by letting them use my archived personal information. I actually took my high school information off because as we know that bit of information may be the answer to a security question to your credit card site.

I'll still use it for now but I'm treading lightly.

Facebook's responds to questions about the new TOS agreement...

I'm not a big user of facebook apps so I'm not too worried about info sharing. The more involved I get the less privacy I have so I'm not going to join something unless I'm pretty freaking interested in it.

If what the Facebook creators are saying is true, it makes sense. Yeah, I may delete my account, but that doesn't delete the things I sent to other people. They still have a copy of it.

WOW! That is shocking!

I had facebook for a bit and then jsut last week my freind wanted me to reopen. I havent done it because I dont like Facebook. Now even more the reason.

I closed it because I googled myself one day and up popped my facebook info. EVERYTHING! I was like, not cool. So I deleted right then and there. Myspace doesnt do that.

I had actually deleted Myspace for abit when that trial was in progress over the little girl who killed herself. I was protesting in my own way. Once they verdict came back that the mom was found guilty, and my neice asking me to rejoin, then I did. I dont use any applications or stuff like that.

Will tell my friends about Facebook!:aok:

From the Facebook Blog: Posted 2/18/09 (bolding mine)

A couple of weeks ago, we revised our terms of use hoping to clarify some parts for our users. Over the past couple of days, we received a lot of questions and comments about the changes and what they mean for people and their information. Based on this feedback, we have decided to return to our previous terms of use while we resolve the issues that people have raised.

Many of us at Facebook spent most of today discussing how best to move forward. One approach would have been to quickly amend the new terms with new language to clarify our positions further. Another approach was simply to revert to our old terms while we begin working on our next version. As we thought through this, we reached out to respected organizations to get their input.

So looks as if the squeeky wheel got the grease this time.

Good, if slightly snarky in places, article about it all.

Geez!!!!

I only have facebook because so many friends and family are on there. I stopped accepting apps a while back because they were bothersome and irritating.

I also prefer Myspace for me I think it is more user friendly anyway.

I like Facebook. I have no patience for Myspace. My sister and I spend more time communicating because of FB. Plus, I am able to keep in touch with many of my friends who live too far away to see regularly.

If you don't want your name to show on FB when you are googled, you must go to your security settings and adjust them. Nothing from FB pops up when I google my name because I have pretty much set my security to only friends and a few other adjustments. I don't friend anyone I don't already know. Also, I have found stuff about people more freely from their myspace pages than I have from FB.

As far as your info staying on someone else's page? If you email a friend and then delete the email account, they still have your notes to them. Same thing.... just saying.

With any public forum, including here, one must behave cautiously. It is plain common sense.
