Does anyone know the names of any monologe books that have any pretty good female monologes (for late teens to early thirties)? I am in desperate need of them for my intensive acting class. And the teacher frowns on too many Shakespearian monologes in ones repitiore. I need four monologes and only have one. Phebe from As You Like It. At least one of my monologes has to be a dramatic classical peice while the other two I need while the other two need to be a dramatic and comedic contemporary.
(I need them by Monday and was just told this today. Thanks.)

Hi,

I've looked for monologues myself for various auditions. I know that at our local Barnes and Nobels I've seen several different books with monolgoues of various types. Check that out. Check out the other bookstores, and of course your local library.

Good luck!

not positive what you are looking for, but just a thought...
What about something from the 3 books in the Princess Diaries series? They are written as a teenager writing in her diary/journal... might be an interesting thing to try...
the author is Meg Cabot

also by Meg Cabot under her full name Meggin Cabot is a new adult novel
The Boy Next Door , haven't read this one yet, but hope to. This one is wriiten as email transmissions from one character to another...

will think of something else...

Not sure if these will work but perhaps.. certainly might help for the comedy one

I hate to put a damper on things, but you should never get your monologues out of monologue books, unless they're VERY old books. Too many people take that route, so any director that you audition for will likely have heard that particular piece before. Especially if it's out of a contemporary book.

Read plays and take note of passages you really like. Sometimes even dialogues can turn into good monologues. That's how I ended up with my favorite Shakespearian serious monolgue. Joan of Arc, just before they haul her off to burn her at the stake. Gods, I love that piece! I scare people with it!

And this is not just my advice. This is five years of theatre classes and several more of theatre experience talking. I actually had an acting professor take a monologue book out of my hand and return it to the library herself so I wouldn't use it, once!

And if you're looking for a serious, powerful feamle speech from Shakespeare, check out Henry VI Part One, Act V, Scene IV. Ignoring all others speech, it starts with "First let me tell you whom you have condemn'd" skip over the lines that begin with "You are deciev'd" and "O, give me leave" and tack on "Then lead me hence..." to the end. Very powerfull stuff.

I'll post the whole thing if it's more convienent for you.

Thanks that one sounds really good. I will check and see if I can find it first.... if I can't then I will let you know.

:P And this is only my second year of theatre classes, so I still have a Lot to learn.

One of my favorites is from The Lion In Winter!
Lots of great stuff there and the character is Eleanor d'Aquitane!
I don't have a copy of the script any longer nor do i remember the monologue i used, but it was Eleanor talking about meeting Henry it starts something like:
Henry was 18 when he came to Paris with a mind like Aristotle and a form like mortal sin...

and it just gets better. I believe i had to cut one incidental interjection between two long lines to make it long enough
They have the script on Amazon

the film version is good too i got it for xmas on DVD, Katherin Hepburn as Eleanor! Yay!

What about "The Vagina Monologues"
GREAT stuff in it, all female-intensive.
