Strike up another dumbass move by the catholic church (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7926694.stm)! :unamused:
*************
A Brazilian archbishop says all those who helped a child rape victim secure an abortion are to be excommunicated from the Catholic Church.
The girl, aged nine, who lives in the north-eastern state of Pernambuco, became pregnant with twins.
It is alleged that she had been sexually assaulted over a number of years by her stepfather. The excommunication applies to the child's mother and the doctors involved in the procedure.

OK, I may be sick now. I guess the stepfather has not been excommunicated for child rape?

Any church that would stand for a 9-year-old to be raped then forced to carry twins to term (which would have probably killed her) is no church I want to be a part of. Hateful.
Here's the snip from MSNBC:
RIO DE JANEIRO - A 9-year-old girl who was carrying twins, allegedly after being raped by her stepfather, underwent an abortion Wednesday despite complaints from Brazil's Roman Catholic church.
Police said the stepfather has been jailed since last week.
Abortion is illegal in Brazil, but judges can make exceptions if the mother's life is in danger, in cases of rape or the fetus has no chance of survival.
The girl's case fit all three of these parameters. So a Judge can grant it for you, but the church still says no. I'm sure the Archbishop is already spreading the victim blame. Because, you know, girls ask for it, especially 9-year-olds.
Oh, and I love how they "allege" that she was raped. :augh:

Abortion is illegal in Brazil, but judges can make exceptions if the mother's life is in danger, in cases of rape or the fetus has no chance of survival. However, doctors at the hospital said they had to take account of the welfare of the girl, and that she was so small that her uterus did not have the ability to contain one child let alone two. "
As much as I’m pro-life, and yes I am opposed to it in most cases of rape, even I’m in agreement that the child needed an abortion. She’s 9! Her body is not built to deal with having children, giving birth could kill her. Her life is clearly in danger, she needs an abortion to make sure that she stays alive.
Gods there are times when I wish that the R.C.Church would just admit that it makes mistakes instead of pretending that they are the official messengers of God.
What really ticks me off is that they’re opposed to underage marriage in Islam because of the same exact reasons for this child having an abortion. The children are under multiple health risks trying to carry to term. Maybe if they could get off their high horses and realize what hypocrites they are in this issue I’d view them with a bit more sincerity, but most of the time I just can’t.

I’m willing to bet that he’s not been excommunicated, after all he helped make new life, with his 9 year old. The fact that it was rape, that’s forgivable after all. Killing that new life because it’s probably going to kill you, that’s not ok by their standards. Remember, murder is one of the few things they cant give you absolution for. That’s between you and God.
Hence the excuse for the excommunication.

Up date on the excommunication. Notice that the artical does state that the "father" -I'd use the term- loosely in this case- has not been excommunicated.
