I've seen this before!! It used to be posted on the bulletin board in my high school band room. I think I'll play it on my Master's recital in October. :rotfl:

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water:

I did some reasearch because allegedly there were more works of Stump's floating around. After a rather fascinating romp through cyberspace (a new Hitch Hiker's Guide in the works, mayhap), I managed to find these (including a cleaner version of Faeries):

Faeries Aire and Death Waltz

http://www.tangento.net/FaeriesAireandDeathWaltzGIF1.gif

String Quartet No. 556 (b) for Strings In A Minor (Motoring Accident) (lyrics by Marcel Marceau)

http://www.tangento.net/FaeriesAireandDeathWaltzGIF2.gif

Prelude and the Last hope in C and C# Minor

http://www.bjk-murgtal.gmxhome.de/fun/notenbeispiel.html

One source listed the second one as a second page to Faeries while another claimed it was the Quartet. Who knows? Who bloody cares? Yeesh!

Proceed at your own risque (sic...em)...ack...'tis contagious!

I wondered if someone would mention deare ol' Peter errrr PDQ! I did so enjoy "Ode to a Coffee Urn" and "My Bonnie Lass", and I always wanted to build my own Seven Wheeled Flurble.

What, you don't remember the Seven Wheeled Flurble? I don't remember the full description offhand, but I do always keep in mind that the seventh wheel is in case of Ab

"My bonnie lass she smelleth,
Making the flowers jealouth,
Fa La La La La La La
La La La La La La!"

My ex-husband is a professional musicion (degree in classical performance - trumpet); one of the things I kept in the divorce was the "biography" of P.D.Q. He never asked for it bach, errrr, back. I adore Peter Schickele and was very sad when the public radio station pulled the show a couple of years ago.

The chorale I used to sing with did "Please, Kind Sir" once. Can you imagine about thirty lesbians (and a token straight or two) singing that with "straight" (pardon the expression) faces? That was even funnier than when we did "Sweet Kate."

When my fiance conducted Opera Workshop back at Humboldt State, they did an all-PDQ Bach concert...including "Oedipus Tex." I forget what else they did on that concert, but I'll ask him when he gets home.

I remember it was something about "Chicken Teriyaki", and "Crossing staid lions with something and underage dolphins" or something to that effect....I can't remember for the life of my what the real title (and punchline was of that one...) I've got to ask him...he'll be home in about an hour.

Oh yeah!! And "The Stoned Guest"!

The punchline for that joke was "Transporting gulls across staid lions for immortal porposies.

Who the heck is P.D.Q. Bach? I'm interested!

The alleged lost son (not lost enough) of J. S. Bach aka Peter Schickele. I suppose one could refer to Schickele as a classical filker.

Some have refered to Peter Schickele as MANY things, occasionally even repeatable <grin> but I always thought he was one of the funnest "classical" musicians around. You might say he's done for classical music what Wierd Al Yankovic did for '80s Rock!

P.D.Q. Bach was considered to be the "lost Bach". Most of his works are purported to have been "discovered" in various tawdry or bizarre locations. For instance, Ode To A Coffee Urn was originally discovered being used as a coffee filter in a (IIRC) roadside diner. Many of his "works" are, to say the least, a bit irreverent towards the classics, but they are fun!

It's been YEARS since I've thought about PDQ/Peter, but he does provide many fond memories :)

That concert stands out in my mind as one of my favorite creations from my time at Humboldt State. The concert consisted of:

Oedipus Tex, a "Dramatic Oratorio for Soloists, Chorus, and Keyboard (S. 150)
Essentially an extremely hilarious operatic setting of the "Oedipus" tale, only set in the Old American West. We'll leave it at this: One of the main characters is Billie Jo Casta....

Knock, Knock, a Choral Cantata (S. 4/1) consisting of period authentic Baroque recitative and aria settings of "Knock Knock" jokes, from which the "Chicken Teriyaki" and "Transporting young gulls across staid lions for immoral porpoises" punchlines come up.

Birthday Ode to "Big Daddy" Bach, for Soloists, Chorus, and Keyboard (S. 100), a supposed musical gift from P.D.Q. to his father J.S. on 100th anniversary of his birthday.

We had intended to perform The Stoned Guest (P.D.Q.'s take on Mozart's Don Giovanni and the choral cantata The Seasonings, based on Vivaldi's Seasons, but featuring humorous spice references), but the music we had proved to be so challenging, not to mention the rehearsal difficulties with singing the above with a straight face, that we limited the program to the three works.

I even used the early P.D.Q. Bach recording of a "concert performance" of the first movement of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, described as a sporting event, for my non-music-major Music History classes. It usually took a couple of playings before folks caught on.

The great thing about P.D.Q. Bach is that for the music novices, it's funny music, but the more one knows about music, the funnier it is. For all the interested, I direct you to the official website, www.pdqbach.com, which features all more than anyone ever wanted to know about P.D.Q. and his alter ego, Peter Schickele (a fine legitimate composer in his own right).

Most, if not all P.D.Q. Bach recordings are available through various sources. Enjoy if you never have, and enjoy it again (even more) if you know it well! :D

Sincere regards,

Ian
