I just can't help myself I am driven to expose the stupidity of some groups... and the few times someone stands up and speak their minds...

It's only make believe

Some Evangelicals are getting a little fired up about Harry Potter books. They claim the books glamorize the occult. Raising the ire of the community, a fundamentalist church in Alamogordo, New Mexico, had a bonfire so its members could burn the writings of J.K. Rowling and other publications.
Jack Brock, founder and pastor of Christ Community Church, labeled the new Potter book "a masterpiece of satanic deception." According to CNN, he went on to say, "These books teach children how they can get into witchcraft and become a witch, wizard or warlock."
Does he honestly believe it can happen? Hellooo, Mr. Brock, it's all only make believe. Wake up and smell the roses fellow. Get real. It's not real. Get it? Children understand this, but I'm afraid the Brocks of this world never will.
I guess make believe witchcraft isn't wholesome but faith based paranoia is. Flying across the face of the moon on a broomstick is out. Flying garbage in the face of common sense is in.
I hate to burst your bubble, Pastor Brock, but there isn't a real Harry Potter. There also isn't a Dorothy, as in the Wizard of Oz. There is no Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, or Wizard! There is no Frodo or any Hobbits or elves, as in Lord of the Rings, nor is there a Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Darth Vader or Princess Leia. The stars never really went to war! As matter of fact there isn't even a Buck Rogers or Indiana Jones. How do you like them apples?
But what the heck, onward Christian Soldiers, move on, move on down the road, the Wicked Witch of the North may be gaining on you. Don't let your children waste their time dreaming about what might be over the rainbow, where bluebirds fly, and why, oh why, can't I? It isn't spiritually healthy.
Tell your kids to just say no to Tinker Bell and Peter Pan, the Fairy God Mother (blasphemy if I ever heard it), the White Rabbit, the Red Queen (sounds like a gay commie to me!) or The Cat in the Hat. It's just not wholesome! It's a plot by the demon worshippers to turn our children away from the Good Book, where they can learn about child sacrifice and that mean old Devil that tempted Eve to eat the forbidden fruit and thus condemned us all to a life where we clothe our bodies and work for a living.
Let them read about Babylon, Sodom and Gomorrah, the beheading of John the Baptist, Moses turning his staff into a serpent, water into blood, and the death of every first born son. They should go to sleep with that on there minds, not some unwholesome make believe nonsense.
Don't send them to bed with visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads or imaginary things, such as a bunch of reindeer led by one with a bright red nose pulling a sleigh full of toys and a fat old man across the face of the moon, they might have terrible nightmares.
And so it goes, that some people are so fearful, and yes, so ignorant they don't want children to escape into the wonderful world of fantasies and make believe, even for a short while. They mustn't dream of Potters like Harry, lest they turn to a life of witchcraft and wizardry. I think I'm going to be sick!
I remember when people of the same mind set as this crowd were teaching their children that listening to Elvis would lead them straight to hell. After the Beatles and the Rolling Stones came along they decided that Elvis wasn't so bad after all because he sang "How Great Thou Art" and didn't take drugs. Well, they were right on one score, he did sing that song.
They fought like heck against integration because they believed that it would lead to inter-racial marriage, which they believed was an abomination. Some of them might still believe that. It wouldn't surprise me.
What bothers me so much about these modern day book burners is they don't want to understand the positive influence Harry Potter books have had on our children. Millions of young people are reading and reading and reading! Their imaginations are being stimulated. How wonderful, since it is the imagination that leads to invention and new ideas. It's a Godsend. Yes, I mean exactly that.
It's scary that these fundamentalists, who condemn anything they are too dumb to understand, have the ear of our President and may be influencing his decisions on everything from stem cell research to whom he nominates to the Supreme Court. I'd prefer he listened to witches, they're not as frightening.
