OSHA releases crowd-control guidelines for protecting workers during retail sales eve

After the stampede that killed a WalMart employee last year, OSHA has released new crowd control guidelines for retailers to use during sales events. Shame that it took a fatality to bring this into the regulatory spotlight. Hopefully some good can come of it and it won't happen again.

Of course, people not acting like animals because they have to have some stupid gadget or gizmo or gift would help, too. But in lieu of that...

Released Nov 17, 2009 - article here

US Department of Labor's OSHA provides crowd control guidelines for protecting workers during retail sales events

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has prepared a fact sheet providing crowd control guidelines for retailers to protect workers during major sales events.

Last year a worker was trampled to death while a mob of shoppers rushed through the doors of a large store to take advantage of an after Thanksgiving Day "Black Friday" sales event. The store was not using the kind of crowd control measures recommended in OSHA's fact sheet.

"Crowd-related injuries during special retail sales and promotional events have increased during recent years," said acting Assistant Secretary for OSHA Jordan Barab. "Many of these incidents could be prevented, and this fact sheet provides retail employers with guidelines for avoiding injuries during the holiday shopping season."

The fact sheet provides employers with recommended elements for crowd control plans. Plans should include having trained security personnel or police officers on site, setting up barricades or rope lines for pedestrians and crowd control well in advance of customers arriving at the store, making sure that barricades are set up so that the customers' line does not start right at the entrance of the store, preparing an emergency plan that addresses potential dangers, and having security personnel or customer service representatives explain approach and entrance procedures to the arriving public.

OSHA also recommends not allowing additional customers to enter the store when it reaches its maximum occupancy level and not blocking or locking exit doors.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, OSHA's role is to promote safe and healthful working conditions for America's men and women by setting and enforcing standards, and providing training, outreach and education. For more information, visit http://www.osha.gov.

I recently had a dealing with a leather company, I'd like to know if it's a unique experience. ( I really don't want to post their name, as they seem to be a reputable company)
I emailed the company 3 weeks prior to needing something, to see if they had it in stock. After a couple days, I hadn't heard back, so I called them. No answer for 4 days, I left a message explaining exactly what I needed, and could they call me back. Nothing. Finally, 4 days before I need the item, they get back to me, saying yes it is in stock, now you will have to pay (a large sum of money) in shipping to get it in time.
Is this a scam? There was no explanation why my 4 or 5 emails and numerous phone calls, plus a couple messages went unanswered, just that "I will ask my employees what is going on"
I got an email asking if I still wanted to order it as I had to tell them right away-and when I answered back, they stopped responding. So I really have no idea if I'll get it in time, if at all.
I was told I am overreacting, but I didnt think so. I needed the item for a major televised event. I tried to find it elsewhere, but noone else seemed to be able to match their quality at an affordable cost. (ie, another company with a similar item wanted nearly 3 times the price I was going to pay)
I want to hear from others who had this problem, and from vendors who may be able to help explain how something like this falls through the cracks.

http://unreasonablefaith.com/2009/11...ilarious-turn/

Summary: Group of Conservative Clergy protests outside the Justice Department to in hopes of getting arrested so they can challenge the newly expanded hate crimes law. But nobody gets violent, or threatens violence, so nobody gets arrested. Members of the group speak, but end up speaking in opposition to, well, nothing, because the law they think they're protesting -- the law that would "silence" them for their speech and beliefs -- doesn't really exist.

But the real fun came at the end:
What followed the press conference was not an arrest, but a counter-demonstration when gay protesters took over the lectern to hold their own news conference:

"We're here to say, my love is legit!" announced David Valk, an organizer of the National Equality March for gay rights.

Another speaker, Ian Thomas, went to the microphone and announced: "I was created a bisexual male. Just like many figures in the Christian Bible, I like boys and girls!"

[organizer Gary Cass of the Christian Anti-Defamation Commission] turned angrily to the AV guy. "We're not on the clock, are we?" He turned with equal anger to Valk. "You guys gonna help us pay for the microphones?"

The gay activist smiled. "God," he said, "works in mysterious ways."
In this case, God took the form of Chuck Fazio, from DC Podiums. Fazio was hired by the religious conservatives to provide the sound system for the event, but upon learning of their cause, he decided to donate his proceeds to the gay rights activists and to give them a chance at the microphone before shutting down the amplifiers.

My response:

I've been watching it all week and I was wondering if anyone else was watching too. I think it's pretty amazing seeing it all in color and hearing the personal stories. The soundtrack is very powerful along with the video.

I was also wondering if any of you gals and guys would like to share their family stories of World War II. WWII is one of the most interesting and one of my favorite eras in history and I love hearing about personal stories. I've already got a few friends on facebook commenting about what their grandparents did, so any takers?

Here's my Grandpa's story (very condensed)- he was a lieutenant junior grade in the US Navy and captain of YP-85 (yard patrol boat crewed by 20 men) in the Aleutian Islands, based out of Kodiak, Alaska. They also found and disabled sea mines in the Bering Sea.

A very exciting opportunity came to me out of the blue today. Some of you know (or know of) Carl Asch, vocalist for the Celtic band Empty Hats and a wonderful singer and guitarist.

Carl will be up from Florida next month and he asked me if I would be willing to host a "house concert" where he would come and perform with his musician friend Mark Sganga. After I picked myself up off of the floor, I tried to think of how I could make this work because I believe this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Due to space issues, I asked my parents, who live in Bensalem (about 1 1/2 hours east of PARF), to host the concert, which they agreed to without hesitation. There are still details to be worked out, but it looks like the concert will be on the evening of Friday, December 11th.

At this point I'm trying to see who might be interested in attending. We have limited space, and some guests already confirmed, so I certainly can't guarantee that everyone who is interested in coming would be able to, but if you are truly interested in making the trek please let me know!

Thanks, Joni
