The Minster is the first place to check out, it's worth the cover charge to get in. Also, Clifford's tower is great. The city was settled practically before time itself. Half of the town is built on top of two other old towns. It's typical to find pubs built over old, still accessable roman baths. Thie other half is built over an old viking town. Very, very interesting and historical place.

Also, check out the Shambles http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shambles.

There's a ton of great, little hole-in-the-wall places. My VERY soon-to-be-husband is from York and is full of info. Feel free to drop me a line!

My husband said if you can, make sure you get into the Minster for Carole Services, they're outstanding. He's a non-church goer, but said that carole service really makes it Christmas. Also, the town center is completely decked out in old-fashioned Dickens splendor.

Unrelated to Christmas, there's a cornish pasty shop that he said is to die for; best pasties and savory pires in York. I'll get the name for you, I just know it's in the center of town, next to a blue shop that sells mirrors.

I'm getting jealous, I wanna go! We may go for the holidays next year, this year is out of the question.
