The Washington Post Magazine's cover story today is about MDRF! They did a nice job with lots of photos...they even mention Local 42. I wish we were there now, but alas, we're just getting over the plague that hit faire a couple weeks ago.

Good article, but I have a bone to pick with the guy doing the documentary on 42. "They are larger girls, but here at faire they feel beautiful"?? WTF?!
He needs to be smacked upside the head with some cleavage....

Actually it was a quote by Todd Chappell, who is apparently working on a documentary about MDRF.

I thought it was a very nice article. It was obviously written from the author's point-of-view as a virgin faire-goer. I agree the big girl comment was completely unnecessary to the article. I think it was an attempt by the guy being quoted (the documentary guy) to explain one reason why a group of people might really enjoy being in garb. He was not off the mark. As a big girl myself, I know I feel more "beautiful" in garb at faire than I do in mundane life.
There is a difference in the way we feel and the way we're "appreciated" by others at faire that's a huge ego booster for those of us who feel less than sexy or attractive in real life because of our weight. I'd be a liar if I feigned otherwise. But I did like the quote by one of the wenches who mentioned that being a wench has not only enhanced her self confidence at faire, but also in the mundane world. I know that's true for me. It's so nice to have a place to let loose without fear of being told you're politically incorrect or over-the-top or whatever other restraints we must submit to in the mundane world. In many ways - the effect is inexplicable for most of us. It's just so difficult to put into words the way I feel when I'm at faire and in full wench mode. I am a wench 365 - 24/7 - but at faire I can let "her" out and feel not only more beautiful on the outside, but more importantly - more beautiful and empowered on the inside. Viva la IWG. Long live the wench within all of us! |

I do believe that he and the documentary team have parted company.

I have MDRF pics all over my office walls & lots of co-workers know I am a guild member. Most of the feedback I've heard from the article is that faire sounds fun & they want to go next season. I have heard from several men that they thought the weight reference was inappropriate as well as the "play acting" inuendo. Bless them for not assuming all wenches are hefty or role playing & appreciating us for who we are, inside & out.
