I have one from back in 2001 or 2002 (128mb, hey that was good back then!) that I use regularly to store, transfer, ect. I have never had a problem with it. I have two other, newer ones, that hold all our music files and the kids pictures. I know that I have heard that they can fail, but in my experience, I have had good luck. I wouldn't go with a cd, if for no other reason than they can break and scratch. The chance of them getting ruined is higher than a thumb drive.

As an archivist, I have to ask: what kind of long-term are we talking about? My preference is for the thumb drive over optical technology, but no matter what you're going to have to do migration if there's a significant change in the programs used to access those files (as in, re-save them in the newest format).

And if you're concerned about durability, I'd recommend the SanDisk Titanium. Those things are nearly indestructible.

I'm leery of thumb drives since one I had just completely failed on me out of the blue. No warning, just suddenly did not work at all. Now I back the important stuff up at least a couple different ways...
