Default Things to do in CT?

I am spending a week visiting my fiance's family in CT (Bethel area).

It's going to be the week of thanksgiving. There are malls here at home- what can we that's different? Shopping at a generic mall doesn't appeal. We have beaches here too- so the ocean doesn't really do anthing for me either.

I am not really relishing sitting around the house, and I won't drive (I drive like a Californian, I'd probably take out a bus full of nuns. I can't drive in weather-we don't have weather here).

We're on a crappy tight budget, so going down to the city for shows is out, in fact going to the city is probably out too.

I live in Norwalk, about half hour south of Bethel. The Norwalk Aquarium is a fun day. I can sit in front of the shark tank for hours. There's lots to do and see there, the exhibits change constantly so nothng is stale. They have a reat IMAX theater too. Not sure what's playing.

It's too cold to go out tot the islands, but the beaches. are still fun. we also have a great historic district with lots of cool shops and resteraunts.

Go to New Haven and visit the Peabody Museum @ Yale (http://www.yale.edu/peabody/). It's my favorite museum in the world. Then go to Jimmies of Savin Rock for dinner, assuming they haven't torn it down yet. It's a fantabulous resturant and I cried when I heard it was getting bought out to develop for beach-front condos. My family is originally from Milford.

    Thanks everyone!

This will give us a little more to do than sit around and watch cable TV.

His family wants to go shopping on black Friday, and I'm not down for that. I'm not insane. Well, not that kind of insane.

We'll skip the casinos- we've got 7 or 8 within 30 miles of my house. Gambling is the same every where, but I like gambling on the res better than Vega$.

I have a feeling I'm going to injest alot of benedryl on this trip- I'm allergic to shellfish, even the smell makes me itch, and everyone keeps talking about going someplace where they bring you buckets of giant boiled seabugs. EEK.

I'm going to have to wear actual shoes (not birkenstocks) and a coat, aren't I?

CT isn't the huge seafood mecca that Maryland or Maine is... There are PLENTY of restaurants that don't have seafood...

I grew up on the coast (for 31 years; Stamford and then Blackrock) and I hate seafood... never had an issue..

For all that I'm from southern CT stock, I hate seafood too. If it lives in the water (or the sand, for that matter) you might as well allow it a long and happy life for all I care. I could always find something to eat - but be warned that I can't remember any resturants that didn't at least have some sort of seafood on the menu. If you're *that* sensitive to it, take the Benadryl.

I live in Sherman but I teach in Washington about 1/2 hour north of Bethel. The musuem is called the Institute for American Indian Studies and the website is www.birdstone.org. It is a great little museum, not big like the Pequots have, but fun nevertheless. Plus it backs up to Steep Rock, a 2000 acre preserve with all kinds of trails to walk and hike. Nearby is Lake Waramug, a large natural lake in a state park with a beach and trails. Bethel itself is a lovely little walking town with all kinds of small stores.

If you think you might come to the museum one day, let me know and if I a there that day I will give you a tour. And yes, it will be cool here so you will need some warm clothing.

OOOOO I forgot. Behtel is a hop skip and jump from Putnam Park, actually the park is about 1/2 mile from the town line. The Revolutionary War was fought around there. The museum is still open, I believe but you cam walk around and the the fire rings where the soldiers camped are still there. It's beautiful this timeof year and there are cavfe you can explore.
