Mars and Other STuff
Ok.. So mars was a pretty bright red int eh westernish sky this morning.. Very nice!
But I also happened to notice a real trwinkler in the easternish ske.. For us it was the second brighted thing up there.. It almost appears to have been going nova.. Anyone have ideas as to what it is/was?

I have no idea what you could have seen. I went out to look at it and I couldnt see it... I was so sad. Tonight it will be the closest it has been in 60 million years! I am going to stay up late and see if I can see it.
Me and a bunch of friends saw Mars on site this past Saturday night.
It was REALLY bright!!
As for what that other thing you saw was Emalia...wait for Mermaid to reply, she is really into astronomy and will probably know what it is.

I would suspect that what you saw in the eastern sky was Saturn--should be the brightest star in Gemini. You might look on www.skymaps.com you can print a monthly sky map off it ( I printed the Southern Hemisphere to take with me to Africa since I was looking for different constellations there<G>) (and yes, I did walk around looking at stars there singing "when you see the Southern Cross for the first time....")
If anyone was clouded (as we were in KC last night), you'll still be able to see Mars well into October--just not quite as close! The new moon helps this week, by next week as we go into first quarter it will compete a bit more.
And even using binoculars if you don't have a telescope brings it much closer!

Ha ha ha. But seriously, there is a bright star, twinkling over my left shoulder when Mars is over my right, almost as if I'm in the middle of the two. (Someone pointed out to me last wekeend at PARF that if it's twinkling, it has to be a star, as planets are a steady light. I believe I knew that many, er, moons ago, but I'd utterly forgotten.) I can't see any other stars where I am right now to put it in context.
Any ideas?
