Epic Stupidity on a Massive Scale

Every now and then, deep inside my cynical misanthropic soul, a faint glimmer of hope for humanity starts to glow.

And sometimes that spark burns brightly enough that not even the internet can diminish it.

When that happens, I turn to the letters to the editor section of my local newspaper and that spark is duly extinguished and order is once again restored.

So, imagine my total lack of surprise when I read the following in the paper on May 27th.

Barack Hussein Obama - 666 - need I say more? - A vote for Obama is a vote for the Anti-Christ. This is a fact.

Even if one is inclined to grant the mythology- and numerology-fueled delusions upon which his premise is based, one can't help but point out that "Hussein" is spelled with 7 letters and "Obama" is spelled with 5. So at worst, it's really 675.

To his credit however, it does not appear that he believes that Obama is a Muslim or is unaware of the proper orientation for a telephone receiver.

The "clue-by-four" responses in the Letters section in the subsequent days have been amusing. Especially the one that pointed out a genuine 666 president from recent history: Ronald Wilson Reagan.

Years ago a friend of mine had a ton of those magnetic poetry magnets on his fridge. For a brief moment I was visited upon by a most glorious muse, resulting in my rendering the following haiku:

There's also now a lot more controversy about the whole 666 thing. But I do agree that he needs to learn how to count the number of letters in a word!
