Well, this program theorized (one amongst many) that the Minoan civilization may be the one referred to as what we consider Atlantis -- that the civilization was lost to us around 3,500 BCE after a huge volcanic eruption on Crete, 75 miles away. It was looking at the ruins found, and discussed the search for physical evidence that the destruction was due not only to volcanic ash, but also to a series of huge tidal waves engulfing portions of the island, running several miles inland.
Whether it's 'Atlantis' remains to be seen, but the evidence, both on land and under the sea along the undersides of the island, support the volcanic ash/tidal wave theory as the cause of the destruction.
The ruins themselves are pretty amazing -- they weren't discovered intially until early in the 20th Century, so there are still photos and film documentation of the excavation and artifacts preserved in amazing condition. They were certainly advanced for their time -- 3-4 storey buildings with indoor plumbing, evidence of early showers in bathing areas, a well balanced, varied diet, with a society with a measure of personal and community wealth. Pretty fascinating stuff.
Oh, and DreaBeth? You mean the History of Sex series? heh heh heh heh. After you went to sleep, I watched for a little longer in my room...you should have seen the episode about those wacky Chinese, Japanese and Hindi sexcapades.... :) :)
