    Default Scot Highland Games Q's

    Hi everyone...

I have a couple of questions:
    1. has anyone ever been to a Scottish Highland Games event?
    2. What do I wear? Ren garb or street clothes?
    3. Is anyone going to the Glasgow, KY Highland game this weekend?

I'm at a loss! I want to go because my geneology traces me back to Scotland...and not even that far down the line! So I was half interested in going to see what it's all about! Any info would be greatly appreciated!

When I go to the Highland Games up here in Colorado it's normaly cold (maybe cause it's in September....) But I wear my street cloths and comfy shoes. As for the location of the place look on the website if there is one.

Hmmm, it all depends, basically, on how confortable you are with wearing your gard in public, and how much of a spectacle your willing to make!

We hold our SHG the last weekend of July, and while I see far more folks in street clothes, I have found that many enjoy spoting a Wily Wench strolling through the crowd!

Just enjoy yourself! If you're not confortable "wenching it" this year, go in-cognito this year, and scope out fun and mayhem that you can plan for next year!

Most of all, enjoy the "foin site o' the bonny laddies in their kilts"! Make sure to pack PLENTY of blue ribbon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hope this helps! Bonnie

    Hey Lucy!

Lovely question and this is just the place to ask it.

Me personally, I go in Garb. Regional Director, don't ya know? I have to look nice and represent the Clan. But, I always see a lot of people 'Undercover' or in street, so it's really what you feel comfortable with.

Me? i tend to stop traffic while I'm taking sanity breaks from the tents. So, it's a safe bet that if you arrive in Grab, you're gonna get some heads turned.

Hey Bonnie!! My spool o'ribbon is already packed in the gear! One cannot go to a Scottish Games/Festival without blue ribbon.

Well, be it that I don't have any appropriate "Scottish" attire, I'm less urged to go in garb, however I hate to go somewhere that it really may be okay to wear it to. What exactly would be appropriate? My garb closet is pretty limited to:

    1. A black flat front bodice
    2. Skirts in these colors: green, blue, and black
    3. A muffin hat & cavalier hat
    4. Chemise shirts in natural (heavier weight), and a white lightweight one. Oh! And I have a green one that matches the green skirt.

Can I do anything even remotely close with any of this??? I don't want to stick out REALLY bad, but I don't mind a little attention.

sweetheart (I'm really rushed here... )

my attire for both days consists of:
bodice, Over skirt and underskirt, cavalier hat, chemise and boots...

depending on the weather, eithe chemise will be fine and either of the hats will be fine. If you're wearing the outfit in your image icon, then you'll fit in fine.

Trust me, they usuall aren't a typical RenFaire that sticks to rules and regulations. Scots and Irish LOVE color and combinations. So go in garb and have fun!!

    Really must dash..

my $0.02 we went to the sat night concert at the Grandfather Mountain NC games last year...really they only people i saw not in mundanes were wearing their tartan...maybe if you don't want to go in full garb you could mix it with mundanes...wear one of your skirts with a normal top (i wear my black garb skirt with a sweater to church) or jeans and a shirt or bodices or something like that

Yep - we have them every year here in MN - this will be the first time in July however...

Wear what you have, but add an ariasaid - (which is not the correct spelling...) essentially, it's a length of plaid (about 2-3 yards), kilted up similar to a kilt, belted around your waist. It doesn't go all the way around, like a kilt, mostly just over your backside. If you wish, bring the far corner up over your left shoulder, and pin it. What plaid you wear DOESN'T matter if you're going historical - family plaids were not assigned until Queen Victoria's days. If you want to wear a family plaid, however, do so - just don't buy into the "it's a requirement" line.
