Default Go easy, it's my first time...

...putting up a scupture piece for you all to rip to shreds...
I started doing sculpture this year and I really like it. I plan on taking Sculpture 2 Asap. This is my first serious piece. You can't see the back, but there is actually a hole in the head and a crack down the back, with figures in it.

The only figure visable in this view is the one with his hands tied behind his back. The glaze ran, and my mom thinks he looks like he has been executed. I can live with that...fits the theme.

    i like it
the use of color to enhance the subjects seeming look of agonizing contemplation actually pulls the peice together nicely

I also like that its a table piece something that would work well in the practical as well as a gallery.

i think however the pieces on the mans head are a bit much but without seeing it up close i cant be sure if they detract or enhance the overall piece

    I give it a 7.5 out of 10
which is good since im pitting you up against most of the art ive seen which are all works of masters

Good eye there shadow...honestly, I think the figures distract. It is my main beef with the whole thing, and dissapointing, but hey, that is what learning is for...right?

The way I wanted them to appear would have been great, but I think I settled too soon because I get sick of looking at the same thing and I wanted to move on. I think it would have been more effective with just the crack running from the head down the back.

    Oh well, keep on truckin'!

It's dark and melancholy to me. Almost grieveing. It would do well at a gallery, I'm sure. I like where the glaze runs deep and dark around the hand next to the face...it really separates them from the rest of the figure. Almost looks like it is a hand from a different person, cradling the face in sympathy or understanding. Like when you are trying to comrfort a person and yuo touch their face. That softens the feel of this peice for me.

You could go with this theme and do a whole series. Do just the head, then on the next peice have the people crawling out of the crack instead of into, really run with it. Then you get people who will collect the whole series. *the cogs in the enteprenurial mind start turning*

I agree either you neet to "tone down" the figures on the head or and a lot more detail to them they seem to be at that inderterminate phase of sculpting... I like your color choices VERY fitting I was going to mention the glazing looks a little haphazard (till you mentiond it had run) Have you thought of reproduceing the piece and trieing to control the "runs" the create and overall effect???
Really a very nice piece! (You should give consideration to a base or stand for it someting simple and angular to add the impact of the piece.)

I find it intriging. What's on the top of it's head? Looks like he's sad and thinking about whatever that is that makes him sad. OR it looks as if he's starving, shaking, etc. I like it.

This was my first time using the glazes in this way. I rather like the haphazzard part of it...I was lucky this time that the runs ran where I wanted them to. It is very difficult to control runs.

On the next piece, that is drying now, I am using the same glazes...still not another piece where color is called for.

I don't really think it is nice enough for a stand...things about it are really starting to bug me. I rarely like a work for too long. Objectively though--I have to say I think I did well for my newness of the media, and it is worth the time to explore further...I may end up creating something really good!

I may have to think of a mixed media way to fix my figure issues. I think to solve this problem in the future, I will work on more than one thing at once, so I have breaks.

Isabelle...there is a series emerging based on thought and the transformation of the human spirit. Holes, cracks and doors are most apparent.

Thank you all for bieng so wonderful and honest, and more specific about what you like/don't like.

    I do appreciate it.
