Default Help needed from the Tinks on costuming

I am making a Tinkerbell costume for one of my 13 yr old girls on my social work caseload. Don't ask how I got roped into this. What started as a suggestion ended up as an afterwork hours shopping trip. Dang, must learn to keep mouth shut.

But, now I'm getting into the task. I bought the lime green panne velvet, the pattern and have wings already. What tension should I use for the fabric on my sewing machine? I do have a ball point needle (lady at store helped with that). Should I zigzag around all the exposed ends? My friend says it won't fray but I want a more finished look.

Next, did Tinkerbell have a wand?

In Disney's 'Peter Pan' she did not, however, in the opening sequence to "The Wonderful World of Disney" on ABC, she does (right at the end, she zaps the title sequence with a long, white wand).

Actually, I would just have your daughter carry a bag of glitter for 'fairy dust'....

Thanks Maggie, I thought Tink had one on the Disney show but not the actual movie. The girl is going for a slighty adul/teenaget version of T'bell so fairy dust will work well. She is going to put glitter all over herself. I wish I had one of those necklaces from faire, the one's with sparkly dust in them. I think it was like art sand with glitter.

By the way just to clarify, she isn't "my" 13 year old daughter. She is one of the kids on my work aseload. She has no mom and her dad is nuts, so I did this for her. Got to get to work on it actually.

One note of caution about glitter-- it hurts like a @*#$#@$% if it gets in your eyes, so if you ARE going to throw it, be careful!

And mad props to you for doing this for this girl. You utterly rock.

She's using body glitter which should look cool. I have wings for her.

The costume has been evolving in design. I found out that I hate working with panne velvet (no serger). So in order to minimize my actual sewing time, I've decided not to include sparkly sheer fabric as petals on the lower half. Couldn't find the right color anyway. But...I found some clear crystal beads that will be added to the bottom jagged hem. Also, I'm going to get irridescent sequins and beads for the dress. I'll put more on the botton and then less on the top. Kind of "fade" them on the garmet. She's going to end up looking like Ballroom Tinkerbell. lol :D But then again I did used to help design ballroom and country dance costumes with my friend.

Don't they all end up being 'your' kids in some shape or manner anyway? :)

Much kudos to you dear and the stuff you put up with on a daily basis....

Lucy, I know this is slightly off topic but, when did you dance and with who? Did you have a Pro? What comps? We used to go to Firecracker. Went to Firecracker about two years ago. Did you do World's. Line or couples? My pro was and is Mike Wagner. Mike's in Texas so I take from Albert Taileur.

I apoligize to all those who just looked at what I wrote and said "huh?" Just as in the Ren world we speak in our own language, so do dancers.

I danced about 4 years ago....I only competed in line dance. I never competed at Firecracker but did attend. I competed at Derby City here in Louisville, St. Louis, and Cincinnati had a small event that was UCWDC sanctioned but they don't have it anymore. I don't know many of the couples people unless they were out of Louisville. I had a lot of line dance circuit friends and my cousin Brian Baracauskas has held the male line dance champion of the world title for a few years. He lives here and is competing in division one couples now.

I withdrew myself from the crowd of competitiors a few years ago because it got too political and it wasn't fun anymore. I mean who the heck wants to dance if you aren't gonna have fun?!?!

Now, I am practically married to one of the most popular line dance teachers in town who is the son of another couple who have danced and taught here forever. I don't line dance as much, but I love a good sexy west coast swing! :)
