    Default deep sociological -type discussion

*G* basic truisim of the internet about "signal" vs. "noise"

"if you want signal, post signal and encourage others to do the same."

(keeping in mind that everyones idea of what's "signal" will be a bit different.)

For you're amusement and possibly edification:

    http://www.earlygirl.com/slut.shtml

Read and comment, please. *G* I'm looking for thoughtful discussion of the word and it's sociological uses. What its says (or dosent) about our own (possibly) conflicted relationships with our sexual selves.

Is "slut" always a *negative* connotation?
What does the word mean to *you*?

Discuss, please... and play nice. No value judgements about other folk's opinons. :P

All the recent discussions put this into my mind.- No it's not *aimed* at anyone. It's just that the word got thrown around a bit, and it got me to thinking about the label "slut" and how its used, and recalled this website to my mind. Nor it this thread an extension of he discussion about what is and isnt appropriate to post *here*.

(yes i know I've been *really* quiet in my retirement.)

First off, I am going to give my imprssion of 'slut' without having read the article, then off to read the article to see what happens.

A slut is a person, usualy a female, who has sexual relations with several different partners. The designation of 'slut' is given to her by other people - she herself may not view her behavior as negative.

    OK, off to read....

I don't agree with that author's viewpoint on the definition of "slut". To me, a "slut" has always been someone who meets one or more of the following criteria:

    1) Will do sexual acts for someone else in return for compensation.
    2) Will do sexual acts for vengeance.
    3) Will do sexual acts for personal gain (ie, try seduce your man just because she wants him, fully knows he's attached, and doesn't care).
    4) Will do sexual acts for social status (ie, competitions to see how many you can rack up in a 12-hour period of time -or- knows her friend likes someone, sets out to bag him just to feel superior to her friend).

I think I'm fairly mild-mannered and it's hard to get any curse word out of me, and I definitely think that the word "slut" as well as others mentioned in the article are a curse word.

I have to say I haven't read the article /yet/. But after reading Theresa's great definition, I'm not sure I could do any better. I do have another caveat.

"Slut" is most often used to describe anyone who has had more sexual partners than "me". (Usually refering to the person speaking). Even if used in a "silly" manner ( "Oh, MisRed, you are such a slut for garb", "Well, you know me, I'm a slut for good shoes) the word is still a perjorative and denigrating. However, until we re-claim the word, it will be used to harm us and others.

Interesting piece of literature then K!
I have mixed feelings about it. As proven in the article, its easy to write an essay on this - I'll keep it brief.

While my definition has definite 'sexual' overtones to it, my feelings aren't 'if somebody is a 'sexual being' they must therefore be a slut', it's more of 'a sexual being with a lack of respect for social boundries coupled with a lack of self respect.'
