Italian minister demands castration law for rapists


AN Italian minister has called for a law punishing rapists with castration following recent sex crimes by foreigners in northern Italy.

Reforms Minister Roberto Calderoli, of the right-wing Northern League party, said Italy should sentence sex offenders to either "chemical castration" - hormone-suppressing drug treatment - or surgical removal of the testicles.

"I think it's necessary to introduce a sentence of chemical castration for sexual crimes," he said.

"I think that surgical [castration] is the most suitable. But even chemical castration will keep these beasts in a condition where they can't hurt anyone."

A 15-year-old girl was raped on Saturday in Bologna. Police arrested two Moroccan immigrants.

Officers also believe foreigners are to blame for another teenage rape in Milan.

Sounds fair to me! But I wouldn't give 'em a choice of types of castration - the only way to ensure they'd stay castrated is to de-nut 'em!

Sigh. I wish the solution was that simple. What is to keep them from using foreign objects to commit the crime with?(ie bottles, broom handles etc) Rape isn't about desire, it is all about control. Somewhere around here, I think I still have information from a seminar I attended years ago that was put on by Battered Persons in Douglas County. There was a study about using castration, chemical or otherwise, to keep the pedators from offending again. Turns out that the castration doesn't always work. Instead of using their body to rape, some of the offenders would use foreign objects to commit their crimes. I will see if I can find the information, but I am pretty sure that it is either packed or in my storage unit. And I am still not allowed to lift too much.

Rosefaeries is right. The physical act of rape is not a sex act; it's merely a tool used to commit hate generated violence on a woman. Without that tool, the rapist is likely to turn to more deadly tools, especially if there is resentment for the castration.

While castration does sound like a good idea at first, as several people have already pointed out, what is there to stop them from using some sort of foreign object. On the other hand, it may make a good deterent. Though there's always the problem of what if they castrate some innocent guy? I just hope they make very sure the guy's guilty first. Ugg, never a nice, simple solution, is there.

Sorry, but I'm going to have to disagree here. Date rape is just as much a violent assault as any other 'type'.
