They are still a little southeast of me, but I'm sure we'll get the smoke and the ash soon. They were saying that it is so weird to have such huge blazes without any help from the Santa Ana winds. Heaven help us if they start blowing!

So I thought about this very issue last night thinking that it seems that every.single.year there's some issue with CA fires. What the hell?

It seems that Southern CA fires aren't a new problem. It's been happening for at least the past 100+ years!

So knowing that, why the hell can't they figure out a preventative measure for this mess??

Get outta my head. Seriously, Artos and I were talking about this very thing last night. But my questions were 'why the hell would you specifically choose to move there, knowing that Every Stinking Year there are fires and the resultant evacuations, devastation, injuries, loss-of-property, etc.' and 'I don't even wanna think about how expensive fire insurance is out there'

And in truth ... that part of the country is just beautiful. San Diego at least, I think. It's got the best climate a human could ever ask for. I love that region. Now I said climate... not fire-proof.

And... you've got some of the richest people in the nation there, too. Hollywood, baby! Everybody knows this.

So... moving there is one thing. Preventative measures to prevent a NON-necessarily natural disaster, is another. (Remember last year, it was caused by a couple of kids farking around with their fire?)

It's like breast cancer. We are women. We know fully well just because of who we are, there's a tendency of this specific type of aliment. So what do we do? We take preventative measures to not only prevent it, but if it were to occur, lessen it's effect.

So why can't they do the same? What other preventative measure issues can be done?

The problem is, you've got idiots like last year, compounded with nature that you can't stop. The main cause of the fires being out of control usually is the Santa Ana winds. How do you tell the winds to stop blowing? The fact of the matter is, you've got very dry land + lots and lots of wild growth + really strong warm dry winds = wild fires every year. Kinda like living in Florida knowing there are hurricanes. You just deal with it.

And in truth ... that part of the country is just beautiful. San Diego at least, I think. It's got the best climate a human could ever ask for. I love that region.

Got it in one. My eldest sister used to live there. It's THE most gorgeous place I've ever seen.

Even MORE reason to try to prevent this devastation from happening.

I am a Natvie Californian. That means 59 summers of fires, living in So Calif where the fires are. One of the problems, one that made this so bad this year, they do what is called controlled burns. They start a fire in a certain area and let it burn until they have a "fire line". A huge area of burned out ground. Nothing left to burn. They therorize that a rapidly moving fire wont "jump" over that burn line. This time the controlled burn got away from them. The areas that burn everyyear are full of vegetation. The Hollywood Hills, Malibu, etc are all hilly areas. The vegetation regrows much faster after there has been a fire. It cleans the ground believe it or not. So then we have a complete circle. It gets up in the 100's here and there is no water in those areas so after they grow bigger and thicker and more dense, then dry out, then burn, etc. Also we have idiots that throw lite cigarettes out and even the psycho's that start fires which is what happened last year. I am now in the central valley, apx 200 miles from the fires but over the ridge we see the smoke and can even smell it at time. We have earthquakes and fires but I would never live any where else. 2 hrs from snow, from ocean, from the desert. 4 hr from Hollywood and Disneyland. We have terrible gangs here, a lot of poverty, a lot of migrant workers and way too many cars but there is something about California...kind of like NYC. Either you love it or hate it! I LOVE IT!!!

riverside- the air is horrible with ash falling all over (my blue car is grey)

we wore scarfs over the mouth to the car yesterday it was so bad. my lungs are not happy but we are ok.

i am so pissed that all the apple orchards in oak glen are going to be ruined. Thats my favorit place to picnic.

I just hard a lightning strike stared a small fire in big bear. GRRRR

^ When I lived in So Cal, EVERY year we had a family outing to Oak Glen! Such a great place! The little restaurant has the best breakfasts....how sad...
