It is surprising how many women would take advise from a gay man where as they would not take the same from another woman. And would not even be the least offended by a gay man mentioning it. And it's not just the ren-faires you see this at either.... many other conventions I have been at have had ladies with warerobe malfunctions that you just wanted to politely/discreetly mention it, but knew better not to.

As far as I can tell it's because most women think most other women are up to something. Men are easier to figure out: we're ALL up to something and that something is usually pretty predictable.
